Default 120 Gallon planted discus tank.

    Hi All,

I have received the table, it's made up of 1.5 inch L Shaped Iron bracket. Table dimension 4 (lenght)X2 (width) with 2.5 feet height. Tank will be 4X2X2 = 120 Gallon. Substrate, will be used as bottom layer, laterite with sand on top. Right side will be used for housing canister filter and the left side for storing foods, medicines, etc. (in the racks). Also, bought a can of matt black spray paint, which I will be painting with, once the primer dries out.

Some of the images below (sorry for the crappy images taken with iphone) -

Thought of sharing my other 3 planted tanks. 2 X 15 gallon and 1 X 25 gallon octagon. One 15G is with cherry shrimps only, another 15G is with 12 neon tetras, 4 assassin snails, 2 black molly and 25G octagon is with sailfin balloon molly, few cory cats and 2 assassin snails.

Is that moss in the cherry tank? I'm having trouble getting mine to grow and not be choked off with hair algae.

Yes, James, it was Java Moss in the cherry tank along with mini Christmas Moss. Do you use CO2 in you tank? If so, raise the bubble count and the hair algae will soon be gone . At first even I also got the hair algae issue, but eventually it got away with the above method. But, I use DIY CO2, made up of yeast and sugar mix.

Excel will also work on hair algae. If you want to annihilate it quickly you can use hydrogen peroxide in a syringe and blast it. It will turn pink, then white, and be gone.

Hi LJSmith, "hydrogen peroxide" is a big no no for shrimp tank. Whether you take the plants out and dip them in the solution separately and rinse and re-plant or by syringe blast, inside the tank. If there is no shrimp, then might be possible, even though I am not very sure of. I have almost 150+ shrimplets (as far as myself and my son was able to count, could be 200+ also) along with their parents in it.

No CO2 in my tank, journal is just below yours. I used metricide to spot treat and could knock the Hair algae down but it'd keep coming back until I dropped my light levels. The moss is in the discus tank so it is 29C and I don't do water column dosing so really non-ideal conditions for vigorous growth.

Selected few plants, and will be going for it. Following is the selected list so far -
    Cryptocoryne wendtii 'green'
    Microsorum pteropus 'Windelov'
    Anubias (nana, coffeefolia, barteri)
Sword (chain, micro and some big ones)
Rotala (blood red) OR Alternanthera reineckii “Lilacina”
Java Moss (trial & error - since I have a bucketful lying in by balcony)

Along with few plants i already have (stargrass, Hygrophila difformis, Hydrocotyle Tripartita).

What are your plans for the discus tank? What kind of discus? Fully grown? Where will you be sourcing your discus from?

    Great planted tanks btw.

so there is grow out involved. As will be seen on SD, planted tanks and a discus grow out are a very challenging thing. You could grow them out first and later make it a planted tank?

Thanks Adive, but a separate grow out tank is not possible due to space constraint. So, will try to go for as large as possible or say my pocket can afford and will try my best to grow them out.
