Sadly, I am giving this a go as a more natural treatment before I get to any sort of meds. As I have 1 fish not eating at all and another that is picky.... I will report back

Any updates on the effectiveness of the orange Phil? I also wonder if having the orange in the tank would cloud or foul the water in some way if I put a full peel into my 75 gallon for 24 hours for example.

Ive tried it 2-3 months ago when my discus were a bit low in the appetite after a 5 day Vacation , and honestly didn't notice any change in discus appetite whatsoever.
The water didn't foul for 10 hours with peels in it .
I wouldn go for a 24 hour my self though. Better replace the peel with a new one after 5-10 hours .
The water did smell like orange as described by others in this thread.

Sorry Sean, I didn't see this until now... So as far as effectiveness, I am still up ion the air, I def noticed a pep in the step, I only did it a few days. I found no ill effect with water cloud or anything. I left the peels in a full day and changed each AM.

I was chewing on an orange today as I was watching the rascals frolicking in the tank and recalled the orange peel treatment. So I dropped the peel in. Also revive the thread for those new to the forum.

Will it work if I throw it into my internal sump?

My understanding of the article was to change the orange peel out daily ..
I don't eat that well so I use orange extract when I do water changes !
Very little as it is strong ...Right now I still use 1 drop per 20g.
Been doing this all summer on more then my discus ..

Given that orange extract is ~ 150 proof, maybe they are enjoying pretzels with their beer.

I wonder if lemon or grapefruit will also work. I have one discus who pecks at the peels while they are floating on the surface. The others in the tank don't.

See the comments regarding a credit given to Dick Au for mentioning this bit of 'voodoo' discus husbandry.

Sorry for reopening an old thread... however I want to share my feedback and experience regarding using orange peels.

I have a small discus, stubborn one, which refused to eat. I tried raising temperature to 92F, Epsom salt, regular salt, blood worms, life blood worms, deep beef heart mix in garlic, changing daily 100% water ... nothing worked

What worse, it didn’t work for a few weeks (5-6 weeks).

Than I hear this voodoo technique with an orange peels, so I decided to try it out. surprisingly the next morning after adding it fish become much more active and swim towards to food. The next day (still with orange peels) started to eat bbs!

Can it be a consistent? I don’t think so.

The benefit of the orange peal is to stimulate appetite.

Gotta admit, always wonder about how something like this gets started.....How many different fruit/rinds/peels went into the tank until it was noticed that orange peel and garlic was an appetite stimulant.
Also I agree it is something of an Iconoclastic solution to poor appetite. Good to know it worked for you, every additional effective technique is worth sharing, thanks
