    Default Fluidized sand filters

What's the latest on fluidized sand filters? Anyone using them here? I'm planning to try them on my setup, since I'm running canisters the idea is to use one of the canisters as pump for the fsf. Should work, right?
As far as I've read the only downside is the possible release of toxins in case of a power cut.

I haven't used these myself but have had friends who did so. The point behind fluidized sand filters, like all other filter designs, is to have a huge surface area for bacteria to colonize. Sand is a lot cheaper substrate than those plastic balls!

The main downside I've heard is that you always end up with some sand in the tank. Of course, if the tank has a sand bottom, that's probably an acceptable problem.

How about doing a Purigen reactor instead of sand?
