    Default Heater for 100 gallon

    Hi all,

I've an urgent problem. I have two 300w hydor heaters and they happily kept my tank at 29c for the entire wisconsin winter including when I was away for a week and the house thermostat was set to 60f. Today I had a bunch of snails going for the surface, cardinals breathing at the surface and discus hiding. Temp had jumped up to 32c overnight. I unplugged my heater.

    Ph 7.4 (no change)
    Gh 11 (no change)
    Kh 7 (no change)
    Nh3 0 (no change)
    No2 0 (no change)
    No3 20 (no change)
    Temp 32 (usually 29)

I need to replace the heaters with something more reliable. What are people's recommendation.

Another option would be to look into a quality heater controller and use the heaters you've already have.

Ordered the inkbird. For that I plug the heaters into the controller and locate the probe away from the heaters and I'm good to go? After calibration?

Petsmart down the street has eheim jagers so I'll buy one in case the heat controller doesn't work out

Yes. Plug them in and set them a bit higher than the controller. And then just dial in the temp you want with the controller.

do these things have thermal cutouts to prevent overheating? or is it just that since is a dedicated controller, it should be more reliable?

I'll probably end up getting the eheim jagers and using the controller. Redundancy never hurt anyone especially with some as critical as temperature.

Thanks for the rapid and detailed responses!

For what it's worth, I used Eheim Jagers for many years in discus tanks without a hint of problem.
    Very reliable IMO.
