    Default Tender Owl Moments

There is an owl family at Greenwood Cemetery near downtown Orlando. I went to visit them today. This family is known by some of the local photographers so the nest was easy to find. The parents tend to sleep during the day and feed early morning and late evening.

This is mom at the nest entrance.

The larger of the owlets joined mom at the entrance and mom preened the baby.

    The baby returned the favor.

Baby reminding mom the grub is for him.

    Happy baby.

Whoa! Those are amazing shots. Owls are the coolest birds. They do just look wise don't they? Do you know how many young there are? Just the one?

Great shots. That is some unbelievable camouflage. Used to seeing a lot of barn and great horned owls around here

Thanks Jenene and yes, they do look wise to me. There are two owlets. There is an second lower entrance below the place where mom and the larger sibling were perched.

Thanks Ryan No kidding on the camouflage statement. It was sometimes hard to find them in the viewfinder. The large oak trees suit them so well.

    Pat,
Great shots there! Owls are so incredibly hard to find in the wild, that you have a place with an accessible nest is awesome good fortune! I'd be there all the time!

Al, the location is known to some members of my camera club and I simply meet one of them to show me the location. I think the only reason it was found was due to the proximity of an eagle's nest. Plan on visiting the nest several times a week.

Nice ones! I've never seen one in daylight in the wild that I can remember. I know they are around though. Sounds like you have a great camera club, invaluable.

Thanks Matt and I do. The club as invested a little time with me in introducing me to local areas I have not been too. I also became the new IT director for the camera club so my way of giving back.

I was in Cape Cod this weekend for a family party. My brother in law has a house in Harwich Port and there were 2 owls hooting right outside my room for hours on end. They were so loud very late into the next morning I almost opened the window to send them off and visualized your sweet photo. I stuffed a pillow on my head and I think they finally stopped around 2 am. So thanks to you I was environmentally appropriate! I was a visitor in their world. Thanks for the image in my head!

Very cool Jenene. I love hearing the owls at night. In your shoes I would have been thrilled to listen to them. I do hope you got some sleep.

It was really cool for the first few hours! After the exhaustion set it not so cool anymore. Would have loved to see them though!

I heard yesterday morning that the older owlet was found dead at the base of the tree containing the nest. The owlet was buried where it was found. It is suspected that the owlet lost it's balance and fell on it's own accord.
