Default New to the hobby and looking for canister filter suggestions.

Hello everyone. I'm in the process of doing a lot research on discus, and planning my aquarium. I have 55 gallon tank and plan on a bare bottom set up with rocks and driftwood.
I was hoping to get some advice on a good canister filter set up. I was looking at the Eheim Prof. 3 XLT with the built in heater, but have been reading some negative reviews. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have the eheim pro 4+ 600 on my 75 and love it. I can't speak about the one with the integrated heater but I can only imagine it could be an expensive potential problem.

The pro4+ imo is a great filter although I will be switching to a sump soon

I would definitely recommend using the eheim prefilter on the intake.

i ran 2 filstar xps on my 80 gal with inline hydor heaters which i liked. the filstars were great filters,
easy to take apart and clean. they were my fav smaller canisters.

For a tank that size I would go w a hob. Just way easier to maintain and will do just as well. MAybe add a sponge filter somewhere much cheaper and in my opinion less pain. I prefer sumps. But if not I just love the ease off quickly maintaining an hob

i have used fluval 300 and 400 series, but not the 406 specifically.
i really did not like opening the lid of the canister. maybe they have changed the design? i dont know, but i stopped buying them because of the lid and how hard it was to open. they filtered well tho.

it's very good, except of impeller cover. they are so fragile. you're gonna change them once or twice per year. from my practice.

yes i forgot about the impeller covers... i had to replace every one. i am still running an older fluval on a tank in the community, and its new impeller cover is cracked again :/ and i am very gentle with them...
