Thanks for all the feedback and info here guys... Sorry to take over the cool spawn and amazingness of that with this chatter. But it seems very informative and useful. You may save someone else and their fish by sharing this...

Any reason why you charged ahead with the carbon OP? Just your normal process? Many people have gone back and forth over to use or not to use and all that, just curious on your decision making. I myself stopped using carbon a long time ago as it just seemed to be one of those things in the hobby that wasn't necessary.

I just used carbon as my normal routine. The carbonated filter cartridges I use in my HOBs are cheap and I was buying them 48 at a time. For a really long time things were going well and I saw no reason not to use carbon, I use it in all my other tanks also. Everything was going along fine in the discus tank so you know the old saying "if its not broke, don't fix it" Fast forward to 6 months ago (ish) and I started noticing the pits, started researching and reaching out to Al. My first step was to up my waterchanges, I never missed a day, did two daily water changes some times on the weekend, then I decided why not remove the carbon it cant hurt. That's when I started noticing the pits looking better on a few fish, then they spawned so I am pretty sure its helping. Now I have ordered the calcium per Al's suggestion to replenish the water with what the fish may need to fully recover.

I also need to point out that at no time have I noticed weird behavior on the fish. so I really had ruled out disease in my head, but I went through with a 10 day metro treatment just in case. other than that, these fish have never had medication that I can remember. occasional salt but nothing else.

    Jacklyn,
I know you probably don't want to hear this but
I'm feeding live mosquito larvae their absolute favorite.
is really not a great idea. Yes, Fish will love them, but they are great parasite hosts. I'm not saying Mosquitoes caused your issues here, just that they aren't necessarily a good food choice. I realize some people use them and swear by them. Its a personal choice what to feed your fish, but there are definitely risks involved with Mosquitoes, to both you and your fish!

they really are such beautiful fish. just a note re: the pits, i had two discus that developed very small pits. i took the same route and tried metro even tho there were no other symptoms. there was no improvement. then i tried the mineral deficiency route and soaked their food in boyds vitachem. the holes eventually closed over, disappearing as quickly as they had appeared. i never discovered what caused them and i dont know whether vitachem helped, but i doubt it hurt. just an idea: http://m.drsfostersmith.com/product/...fm?pcatid=4998

as of this morning (Monday am) the eggs still remain. Yesterday the male decided to come back to his parental duties and rejoin the female in protecting the eggs and the territory. I left the moonlight setting on in the tank overnight, the eggs look the same as they did Saturday, pinkish orange. Three have turned white. Mom doesn't even budge to eat that I have seen. You can see the line on the filter where ive done water changes to, I can only do like 2" of water changes at a time due to the height of the spawning site they chose this time.

If these hatch, when should I see that? They are roughly 41 hours old right now.
