    Default Filter Media

Hi, I am new to keeping Discus and looking for some advice about tank set up filtration etc. I have read on other posts that some people don't use carbon in their filters, I have Fluval FX6 canister filters on my 410 litre tanks and a Aquamanta 300 canister on my 140 litre tank. I intend to use one of the larger tanks for Discus as well as the smaller one as a incubation tank. What media set up should I be using in these filters ?

    Terry.

Your canister should be focused first on biofiltration, the the later stages should be water polishing. Mechanical filtration should be accomplished in the tank by utilizing a prefilter. I use a mix of Seachem matrix and pond matrix for biofiltration inside my canisters, as well as polyfill and Purigen for water polishing.

There is no need for carbon if you have a strong biofilter unless you are trying to remove medications. All it does is rob your biofilter of food, and needs to be replaced periodically.
