Very very cool ryan. I had no idea they were so tough to keep!
Are there two different types in there ? What else is in there and what size is that tank?
It's been about 10 years but I've finally worked up the courage to get Uaru fernandezyepezi again. It's no small feat -- to give them the soft, acidic water they need to thrive, I had to buy a 275 gallon storage tote for the garage, a 300gpd RODI unit, a water pump, and about 100' of 3/4" hose just to make water changes a possibility.
These guys are always touchy, moreso during acclimation, and are very similar to discus in their temperature and clean water requirements. I had a few hiccups in the beginning but they all seem to be eating well now and they're slowly being adjusted to RO water. As of right now they're in about 50% mix.
Let's hope this round is better than the first one, which ended with HITH due to hard water.

It's twelve Uaru fernandezyepezi and three Heros sp. Inirida with some lemon and serpae tetras, and cories. The tank is 210 gallons.
These are super impressive fish Ryan. It will be cool to watch them adjust as the water softens.

Your discus are talking to you....are you listening
Ryan you already know Uaru are my next favorite fish after Discus. Your tank looks great. May have been some effort but these fish are not something you see everyday. Well worth it!
Best of luck with them...Im sure they will do great in your care!

They're definitely some effort. My water bill is going to be insane with all the RO I'm making.
Tonight I filmed them eating a dinner of Romaine lettuce and crushed, dried mealworms. For a fish that's supposedly primarily herbivorous, they sure seem to prefer the meat over their veggies. Typical spoiled kids.
That is so awesome Ryan. Such a beautiful looking fish. TFS

Ryan, those are just stunning. I can see why they are Al's "next favorite". I have never seen Uaru before. They are not only interesting but really relaxing to watch. It's something in the way they move. They are active but glide so smoothly. I think my blood pressure just dropped in that short video. I believe all well kept aquariums are therapeutic but this breed is the "med spa" variety. You can send me a bill- I think my insurance company will approve it.
Good luck with them and thanks for sharing!

WOW- those are awesome! I have been raising fish for a long time and never even heard of them until now. They look like saltwater fish. Where did you get them from if you dont mind me asking? You mean there are fish out there that are more picky than discus?????
Awesome Fish!!
A lot of blackwater cichlids are pretty demanding about water quality — Hoplarchus, altum angels, Satanoperca, etc. They come from nearly pure water where there is no bacteria, so if you don’t keep the water very clean they’re easily infected.
I bought these from a local hobbyist who got them from Mark Chen at Discus Origins.

I saw some 45 years ago in a New York city fish store. Never saw any since
until now.
How much were they?
Jay
I got them second-hand for $80 each. They were much more than that when the person I got them from originally bought them I’m sure. The small ones are fairly reasonable during collecting season but they’re also very touchy during acclimation.
