Default Possible food for my Electric Blue Jack Dempsey?

He is 10" in a large tank by himself, Discus and angel tanks are far away from his tank. He eats big foods. I wonder if I could also feed him the 1" freeze dried mealworms I feed to the birds? They are soft and crunchy. What do you think?

I sometimes gave my oscar meal worm treats that I picked up for my lizard, but not too often cuz I was worried about their chitinous exo layer.

If you want to feed the mealworms a better choice is to buy the live ones. Store these in a container with old fashioned oatmeal(dry).

They will molt and shed their exoskeleton. When they do they are soft and easily digested. They can be kept in the frig or at room temp. At room temp they grow faster and molt more frequently. The oatmeal boosts their nutrition as well. They dont shed all at once though...so you have a long term food. If you let the final molt go by they turn into beetles..these too are soft at first and can fed...But if you leave them they will lay eggs and you will.have mealworm again soon.

Another option is get a bunch of random small fishfoods and use knox unflavored gelatin to make gel food.

Thanks for all your replies! I will just stick with his large pellets and large stick food. Once a week I hand feed him a big pinch of Al's FDBW and he jumps out of the water a ways to grab the loose worms from my fingers. Sometimes he grabs a finger too, startling but not painful even though I can see his teeth. I will get a pic of him in his tank to show you all later on. He is as colorful as the most colorful discus. All greens and turqs.

m_IMG_0770.jpgHere is a pic of JD as we call him. He could be a she for all we know, they look alike. What do you all think, male or female? Just think what he would look like if Al, Pat or Matt had taken this pic. He is alone in a 65 gal. tank, I change 80% of his water every week or so. I am not a photographer at all. Clay and plants for me.

I'm using dried mealworms for my large Uaru and severums. I crush them in my hand and throw them in. They go crazy for them.
