Default Discus pair eating eggs. Need some tips

    Hello,

I've purchased a proven pair of Neon Sapphire that have raised fry before. They've laid eggs a few times now and the first time they ate most of the eggs but only had a few wigglers. The second time they ate all the eggs. They just laid eggs again and I'm thinking of covering the eggs this time but I'm worried that the parents my not fan the eggs if I cover them. I'll be using gutter guard as that's what most people use. Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks in advance

Some parents take multiple attempts before they finally get it right. Any sort of wire mesh around the eggs will help keep them from being eaten, but there's no guarantee that the parents won't eat the fry once they become free swimming.

Unless you are in a hurry I would give them more tries before doing anything about it. As fishbubbles said most domesticated discus needs a few goes before getting it right. But most figure it out in the end. My pair needed 16 times before I got them to raise fry :P

Even though they have done it in the past, it may take some time to settle in to their new environment before they will raise fry again. If you do cover the eggs, you are going to want to use something like methyl blue to combat fungus. If they continue to eat the eggs/fry, you could always try raising them artificially.

Thanks for all the tips. I've covered this time and they seem to be fanning them. I'll keep everyone posted.

When do you recommend removing the mesh. Wigglers or free swimming?
