I've been keeping Discus for more than a year now and have always done at least 50% daily WC in my 180gal, except for a few days where I did closer to 30% due to a problem with my water.
Hi i have kept discus in the past and i am currently setting up a new 65 gallon tank in which i will be raising 6 2inch discus.
It seems that everyone has different opinions on what percentage water change is best, some say 100% , some say 75%, 50% etc.
What are your opinions and what do you do ?
It should be fun to see what the varying percentages are and the success rates, thanks.

In my 75 gallon grow out tank I do two 85% water changes per day and in my 55 gallon tank with my adults I do 40% daily.
33% daily on adult wilds

I do 100% in about 350 gallons daily. With 2" discus, I would highly recommend going as large as possible. If you do 100% daily, you'll be looking at 6" discus in 12 months, maybe 8" discus in 24 months.

At my age, everything is irritating.
I do 75% on my 265 gallon and 90% on my breeding tanks and fry tanks. All tanks get the bottom siphoned every day.
I perform 100% daily for juvenile discus.
My heaters are horizontal stuck to the back of the tank as low as I can get them. After picking up any loose debris the siphon gets set right on top of them and the tanks drain to the top of the heater. So you can put me in the 90% to 95% camp.
When choosing how much % water change to do, you really need to consider so many factors. While theres no doubt that you won't hurt your fish with more water changes. The volume depends on so many things. Some as follows....
1. size and number of fish (discus and others) in tank
2. tank size
3. tank set up... bare, substrate, planted etc
4. type of Foods fed
5. Amount of food fed
6. number of times fed
7. Goals for the tank and fish
8. Age of fish
9...............who knows what else.
I have some tanks I do 100% per day, others 30% every other day..some even less...It varies depending on many things. % water changes done by members, though interesting to see how different everyones tank regime is, need to be taken with a grain of salt IMO. Theres just too many factors that come into how much water you "should " change vs how much you chose to.. The best take home here is err on the more water change side... You won't go wrong if you do which is why many chose 100% wc or more.

Lol. I started to answer this post yesterday and didn't but would have said close to what Brew said, just not as clear maybe. You really can't post a poll like this and expect to get valid numbers back unless you give very specific parameters. With very specific parameters given you might get a lot more similar responses or maybe not I guess. I do 30% to 100% daily on my tanks. Some are breeding pairs some are grow outs and some are a community of adults and the bioload swings wildly from tank to tank.

Thanks everyone for the great advice and for voting in the poll, the information was greatly appreciated, im going to use Al's advice on the matter and get to know the tank and fish and figure out which percentage is best suited to my tank and needs.
Ill be sure to start a grow out blog similar to ricktahzone's and keep everyone updated.
Thanks again, Ross
