We would all love the room for 40 discus!!
Hi everyone, I'm going to have my 400g free of fish next week and I always wanted to keep Doing! Could I keep Discus in the 400g?
It's 2300gph pump on it but I can turn it down no problem. What do you advise in order to make this work?

5.75x theoretical turnover rate is fine. You probably won't even get 5.75x when friction and head pressure is accounted for. Just make sure flow is diverted in such a way that they have calm areas to rest.
I would have to have small ones as I am not dropping 5k lol
I might just have to shut it down for a while and grow out 40 juvies.
Seems alot of the discus sellers with name brand discus carry a high price 150 plus! Have discus gone up in price?
I wonder how hard it is to get Discus shipped from uncle Sam to Canada?
I'm an hours drive away from you Mike so if you go forward with it I'd love to see what a 400g full of Discus looks like. I don't think Uncle Sam ships to us so you may have to get them on the US border side.
Bob Garside would love you as he's just North of Barrie but haven't seen if he still has his fishroom.

What kind of filtration would you use for this monster Mike ? Sump ?
With that number of discus its definitely worth the hustle to buy them young and raise them your self in a smaller tanks first .
Search for Wooduck 's tank here for a similar discus experience .
I have a 90 gallon with two 7 inch socks then into about 1000 scrubbies lol.
It's just that I have never had discus before. If I get 2 inchers will they need my TLC 12 hrs a day? I have no doubt I can raise discus from small with keeping stingrays I am seasoned on keeping demanding fish but my schedule is very busy these days.
They will need daily WCs and cleanups or better said Nightly WCs and cleanups after their long and hard day filled with 3-4 juicy meals .
A normal everyday schedule would look something like this :
1 . Heavy meaty feed in the morning prior work - (5 min.)
2. Auto feeder for 1-2 dry meals while on work . (0 min. )
3. Heavy meaty meal after work -( 5 min. )
4. Big 90% WC with aged conditioned water along with prefilter sponge squezze and glass wipe down. (20 minutes to hour depending on your task organization ) .
Sounds easy, doesn't it ?

Thanks for that break down Filip all that could be done except the water changes lol. I do have a filtered drip system on the tank. I could keep the nitrates at 5ppm no problem....hmmmm
Experienced breeders claim that drip has proven inefficient when it comes to raising young discus Mike . Maybe you can still try it and give us your first hand experience with it.
Or you can start them in 150 gallon tank for the first few growing months for quicker and easier maintenance and WCs and transfer them in your monster tank with drip once they are 5-6 inches size . That would be about 4 months of daily maintenance before you transfer them in drip and cut down the feedings to 1-2 dry food meals per day .
Just go with larger discus. More money up front but they would be much more suited to your setup
Yes makes more sense with the smaller tank.
I have access to get 1.5 inch discus very good quality and bred close by. Would they be more difficult at that size then say 2.5 or 3 inch?
