Ryan and Adam, thx for the replies.
Adam, you imply you don’t use flake any more....is there a reason? Also, did you ever use beef heart flakes from Kens Fish? Pros and cons over the frozen beef heart cubes? Thx in advance.

Most of my fish want their food on the bottom, so I feed mainly Repashy, with some frozen and pellet/stick food now. I haven't had discus in a while now, but I didn't use flake with them. Mostly FDBW with some frozen foods and beefheart mix.

I don't like the beefheart flake from Kens. Not sure if all of them are like this, but it clumped together and eventually crumbled into little bits only the swordtails would eat. Never tried the pre-packaged beefheart cubes.

I think one important question is size of your fish.

I stopped feeding frozen BH at some point and stuck with other foods. Tank stayed much cleaner and there are plenty of nutritious foods out there that are not as messy. I did feed kens BH flake for a bit. I don't feed any flake anymore. Just don't feel it's necessary if you are feeding fdbw and quality pellets

The manufacturers may not like this, but I'm not sure that there's much difference between brands of flake foods. Some of them have specific additives, e.g. medication, coloring agents, but the macro nutrient composition is likely similar.

One real difference between different batches of flake food is the age. Vitamins added to flake food will break down over time. If you buy flake food in bulk, I recommend keeping a small batch out and freezing the rest. That's what I do. I'm most happy when I get batches with gigantic flakes, because that's probably not old stock.

I put flake food in my tanks for all the dithers, such as German rams or tetras. Over time, I find that discus, and even altum angels, will start to eat them. My primary food is still frozen beefheart. In my experience, nothing put on size like beef. I don't have the "messy" problem other people have reported. My beefheart stays in one chunk pretty much until it's completely consumed.

At my age, everything is irritating.
