    Default Switching to Sponge Filters

    Hello all,

I made the switch to Sponge filters a month ago, but I've been using my HOB in tandem so I still have some BB while the Sponge Filters can be established.
Is a month enough time for the Sponge filters to have BB in them? I want to eventually stop using the HOB and just use the sponges.
    Specs:
    6 adults
    55g
    87°F
    70% twice weekly WC
    Fed 5x per day.

    Cheers

If the HOB was originally carrying the whole bioload, I would expect almost all of the bacteria to continue living there rather than dwindling, and the sponge filters would be well seeded but not yet capable of taking over. Pulling the HOB all at once would probably cause a mini-cycle and the need for more water changes until the sponges catch up. One way around that would be to remove some of the media from the HOB every couple days while increasing the WCs if you see any ammonia or nitrite. That would slowly force growth of bb in the sponges.
