How do you clean an air stone?

There are different types of air stones on the market. If they are the sand paper like ones I would normally toss those out as the pumas like substance that are coated with will wear away. I still have green ones from years back that are running strong but other blue ones that simply fell apart.
I would say soak them in CLR which might work but would read the label first before risking them back in tank.
They have plastic or wood air stones you can simply wipe off.
