Default A Bizzare and grotesque (WARNING!) Find along the seashore....

While walking at a Connecticut State Park this past fall I stumbled on a Strange scene. We were walking along the seashore by a pile of rocks. Looking down I spied a Pile of fish heads.. all heads, no bodies. Neatly piled up. At first I thought a seabird ate too much and regurgitated its daily catch, but where I live and where this is there are no seabirds that I know of that do that, and none I can think of that would keep only the bodies! Next I thought maybe some fisherman was tired of fishing and grew hungry but forgot his lunch so he helped himself to the bait box, My Grandmother used love small fish fried like this and she would eat the whole body, leaving the heads. Maybe a Granny like mine was fishing? Seems unlikely! Next I thought it was a very fastidious Raccoon that gathered up the shiners left by the fisherman and had a midnight picnic? Perhaps with a lady friend they dined over that rock pile and not wanting to look piggish they daintily ate the fish and left the heads in a neat pile.?

Honestly I have no clue what made the pile, but It begged a picture and so here it is...

    Any Theories anyone?

There are some marine mammals that tear the heads off the fish before they eat them, but it's curious that you found them in a pile like that.

Pat, I actually think it is regurgitated, but for the life of me I don't know by what precisely. WE have many gulls but none would do that. I could see gannets doing this maybe, and we have them way off shore especially during storms, but they never come ashore normally. Cormorant are my lead suspect.

Adam, I did suspect seals as we have them, but these fish heads are small. I'm sure they would just eat them whole.

    Tis a perplexing Puzzle indeed.

I suggest that a wave brought these heads ashore, then left them behind when the wave receded back to the sea. Maybe a school of larger fish attacked and ate the small schooling fish, bodies only, leaving the heads to float and wash up on shore.
How far are the pile of rocks from the water Al?
