    Default Fin rot.

    Hi guys.
So about 3 month ago i noticed that my discus had a bit of a fin rot. I uped wc but the damaged fin did not grow back actually even speead to a second fin.
My questions to you guys are: will the fins grow back? How can i treat him: should i treat his gf.
Currently in a 20 gal breeding tank on a system that runs 4x20 gal tank plus 30 gal sump.
Total of 4 adult discuses in the system
    Wc 5% twice a day
    80% twice a week.
80 once a week wc prior fin rot.
No new tank mates but i think i got some x-contamination from my qt. I accidentally used the same siphon on both tanks. Even though all new fish are healthy, they are German bred and the old ones are asian bred.
    Amonia, nitrite = 0
    Nitrate 15 - 20
    Ph 8.2
Tds 220 started using salt at 1 tbl spn /10 gal.
Visually i can't see anything else wrong with him.
    Seems to be eating fine.

    Hi Spilo,
Unfortunately those do not always grow back well. One thing I can advise is that kind of damage often occurs from dragging along tank bottoms where food and debris builds up. It can be made worse if the tank is on the smaller size and the discus on the larger size. Id suggest paying close attention to wiping and cleaning the tank bottoms and consider upsizing the tank... 29 gal-30 gals give you a little more margin of error.

As for the current condition...you can try swabbing the effected area with hydrogen peroxide. On the other fish in the system you can tell if they have the same thing starting by the appearence of whitish fungus on the fin tips... the fungus is feeding on the dead and damaged tissue.
I wouldnt treat them if they are fine.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi guys.
So I kept up on wc even increased it to 90% every day. Tanks get wiped down every day.
Swabbed the affected area with hp.
Now another fish that was in the same tank stopped eating, always hiding in the corner, dark and belly looks really swollen, also noticed that one of the fins is getting a bit shorter. Tried Epsom salt 1 tablespoon per 10g and again in 4 hrs but 48 hrs later all I saw was long, brownish clear, not white feces. That took almost 12 hrs to pass.
My friend suggested to treat with antibiotics so I started a round of furan2.
I'm not convinced this will help but not sure what else to do.

Hi Spilo, got your pm. It is ok to add salt with Furan 2. I have found salt to be very effective with Furan 2. The best way to dose Furan 2 is daily after a 50% or better water change. You will dose for the volume of the tank. Also do not be afraid to continue using Furan 2 after four days if you do not see improvement. I do not recall the Furan 2 affecting the BB.

    Hi Pat.
    Thank you for replying.
I started the treatment this morning so no changes as of yet.
    I will add salt asap.
1 tablespoons per 10 gal I hope this is ok and I will also change at least 50% of water every day / redoes.
    Thanks again
