The chicks came in in early April from Cackle Hatchery. I bought the swing for 50 bucks from a couple of meth heads.

Your discus are talking to you....are you listening
Adorable hens...❤️
It's amazing that all 19 of them arrived in a tiny little box on April 4th. I ordered 15 pullets and 3 roosters. They sent an extra pullet so I have 19 total. I also have 5 hens left from my order to a different hatchery last year. I love my last year'd hens but they are obviously not purebred. These are much better quality.
They give me so much joy I feel kind of silly. They come running to me full speed, on their silly little legs because they know that I will give them a treat. I've been accused of liking them more than my fish. I don't know that it's true. They for sure cause me less worry than my fish have caused me.

Do you have any trouble with the dogs getting after the chickens, Liz? I'd love to have chickens but both of my dogs have a high prey drive.
Hi Martha. Here at home I am top ***** and my word is law. All my animals run free except for when I have to lock my horse up during hunting season when she eats the corn my neighbor puts out to attract deer. My only rule is that everyone get along. I had to whip my little poodle's behind 3 times, each time harder before she got the message that she was not allowed to terrorize the cat. Other than that I have had no problems. I do have to lock the chicken in their house at night because we have possums.
If you were to have chickens you would probably have to build a secure coop and only let the chickens run free if the dogs were locked up.

Liz thats a cool roost you got there. The girls look very happy. I added a bunch of easter eggers to my flock last week.

I have a fox. I haven't seen it but my neighbor who lost a rooster saw him last week. So far, in the last 3 weeks I have lost one of my old hens and one of my pullets.
It's way hard to trap a fox and I can't trap animal in a painful trap. I'm doing all I can do is that keep my 9 year old Basset/ Sharpei mix out during the heat of the day. He is the only dog I have left that will chase critters off.

We have coyote in the neighborhood that shows up once in a while. We keep our cat in a night for that reason.
I don't think that a coyote could take a cat unless the cat was old. Cat's are hunters more than prey

Liz,
I made a trap that we used for raccoons, woodchuck and fox. Its based off the hava heart traps but better imho and costs little to make... Even a Fox, can't resist Chicken as bait. The trap is nothing more than a 2X3 studs, mesh and a piece of plywood for a door. You hinge the door and use a door latch from a household lock. The door is held open by using its weight as tension on a trip wire.

The trap design works for any animal provided you use the right bait and its the right size.

Thanks so much, Al. With my back the way it is I'm not up to building anything. I'll have my neighbor look at it. Her husband can build it. He saw the fox down by a creak behind their house. Her chickens go down there, too. Although she has only lost one and I have lost two I have more chickens than she, and with hers visiting the creak every day I feel that they are in the greatest danger.

Is it legal to hunt or trap foxes where you live? Although we're not hunters, my wife works for a local hunter's organization, so I tend to think of these things.
