A hobby to me is an obsession...It is a love that is never fully satisfied. The job of a hobby to me is to take my money while I happily throw it at them.

I like the interactive nature of discus. When you come into the room they come over to the side of tank to see what you are up to. They are peaceful, slow moving, and give a serene quality to the room. Even less than ideal specimens (as mine are) are remarkable and unique in both shape and color compared to other fresh and even saltwater fish.

I enjoy knowing that I've created an environment all of my own making that supports and generates life.

My discus won't be bred, unless I decide I like my fish more than I like my wife...

I've been keeping animals for my whole life. As a biology teacher, I always had fish, turtles, a bird, pet iguana and more in the classroom. I can't spend too much time sitting watching tv now that I'm retired and much prefer to tend to the trops or Koi. I like the challenges and the vast rewards of watching the serene colorful beauty swimming in an environment I created. Like the Koi, these discus fish develop personalities.....nothing beats sitting inches from the glass and having them swim right up to me with a mere cm between them and me. The only pet I love more is my collie who is my best friend. I made the mistake of putting my recliner between the two big tanks and often sit for a bit before I doze off for a nap.

    Great question.
I live with mine. I'm self employed and work from home so I'm with them a lot. They watch me more than I watch them.
They each have their own personalities. They are part of my crazy managery of animals. Fish, birds, cats, dogs, horses....I'd have a zoo if I had the room and money! lol I've kept Aquariums since I was a kid and have kept all kinds of fish, marine included but now that I'm a Grandmother I thought I would challenge my Aquarium skills with what I was told is the hardest of all fish to keep.... The KING of all Fish. It's been a wild ride! I've managed to not kill them.....so far.

I have been a fish killer for pass 28 years. Knowing from passed experiences, I am hoping to keep my fishes alive for a long time. I am the fish that needed to be kill. Yes, it is still going in me.
Hope you all a wonderful Memorial weekend.
