Default Artificial Raising fry project (my first time)

    Hi Guys,

This will be my first time trying to raise Discus artificially after loosing hope on the parents raise them lol. So I had two pairs(Red Turqs and Albino Alenquer x Curipera Cross) spawned past Sunday night(5/20/2018) and one set of eggs(Red Turqs) started Hatching last night(5/22) and the other pair eggs hatched over night.

Setup: So I'm setting up a 29g tank and will be floating 2 containers to hold bowls inside. Each container to hold separate batches.

Feeding: Will be adding Egg yolk mix after few hours from free swimming. I also am planning on adding bbs in little portions hoping they would start eating from day 1. Will be feeding every 4 hours, 10pm being the last and 6am being the earliest feeding followed by water changes.

Any expert advice will be appreciated. Here are some pictures, big batches of eggs hatched -

    Sanjay,
    Great looking stock!

Whats your plan for the egg yolk mix? Are you using a wet mix smeared.on the rim of tank? I know Cliff here uses egg yolk powder very successfully. I have always used Wattleys egg yolk recipe/technique.

    Thanks Al

I was initially planning on going with egg yolk powder. But only place that has it here, sells it by 1lb lol(too much for me for a project I'm not sure of). So this is the plan and I'm sure it was Cliff's comment I read somewhere as a replacement for powder- I will hard boil a egg and press the yolk through a fine mesh so I get powdered(kind of) yolk I will then mix some raw yolk and spirulina powder and a pinch of zooplankton flake(powdered) that I have lying in my fish room.

That sounds alot like the wattley recipe I use. 1 egg yolk raw.. 1 egg yolk from hard boiled and add spirulina powder, I also added powdered krill. It makes a tar like paste.. this you smear above the waterline thinly and let dry 15-20 mins... then raise the water line to the food. Its labor intensive and you need to change the water every 3-4 hours for the next 2 days or so then switch them over to bbs. Many have had success with just going with bbs from the start. Theres a strain of the, the ones from san francisco bay , that are supposed to be smaller than the salt lake strains....those may account for the success.

    Thanks Al
I don't have Krill powder but I have zooplankton flakes from Brineshrimpdirect. Can I powder that and add ?
This is how I smeared I did it all over the place ... But I follow what you said for day 2 on how to apply the egg mix. Luckily I do have the San Francisco Bay brand I will start adding that from Day 3.
I'm currently fed them 4 times today. Will up the feeding more tomorrow.

Sanjay, next time around wait to feed them until they are swimming. If they are clumped together they wont eat as they are living off their yolk sacs.

I guess you are right Al ! But this project has been a good learning point for me. Still have about 200+ fry combined. Will try me best to save them.

Cliff, I will take your advise. I will stop feeding them now. Will focus only on clean water. What I'm mainly confused is I see some free swimming(or maybe my assumption of free swimming is wrong?)When I see some fry swimming around on the surface, I consider that free swimming with majority of them still clumped (yesterday, day 1 of feeding).
Tomorrow can I start feeding bbs ? or would you recommend egg yolk mix ?

Shout out to Al Castro for guiding me with this project.
My attempt 2 is a big hit !!!
With over 100+ fry and only loosing 7 during in this process I think is a big hit
Here is a pic of fry from Day 5 free swimming-

Big thanks to you and Cliff for pointing out on how I started feeding them early in my Attempt 1. This time I waited till the 7th day, from the day they hatched.
