Default Larry's "Your Story" 2 Apisto macmasteri

Several times I have tried a "Discus only" fish room and it just doesn't work for me. With only discus it isn't long that I find myself longing for the other fish I love. One of those is Apistogramma's. In the fish house I currently have twelve 20 gallon planted tanks set up for apisto and dwarf cichlid breeding. It is really hard to narrow it down to just one tank but I will select the pair that is currently breeding for this story segment. So here are a pair of Apistogramma macmasteri.

Thanks Pat. I find that Apisto's in general are very good parents. What is unusual about this pair is that the female is tolerating the male being around. Quite often with apisto's the male is not allowed anywhere near the fry and in many cases has to be removed from the tank or the female may beat it to death, literally.

That’s a nice tank. I’ve not seen this type of ram locally in my area. They are really colorful. Are these breeding colors or are they always this colorful?

Hey Patty. They are not rams. The Genus is Apistogramma and the species is macmasteri. Google Apistogramma and you will find many different species some very colorful and some fairly plain. They are from the Amazon basin, the same as rams and they are both cichlids but not the same otherwise.

sweet apisto's Larry...stunning coloration...I too have the itch for more than 1 species, but in light of my multi tank syndrome from the past, I have opted for a 125 gal and my 2 boys have a small tank each...but back to your thread...very nice indeed...I watched the youtube clip you did of your fish room recently...there was a number of tanks empty awaiting the arrival apisto's...is this some of them?

I hesitated to call them rams, but the shape and size seem so “ram like”. Now here it is 6 am & I’ve already learned some thing new. Ha ha

Here is an update on the Apisto macmasteri. I have been feeding bbs to the parents and fry and the fry are growing very quickly. Our local clubs fall auction is in about 3 weeks and I'm hoping I can sex them by then and move them out encouraging the pair to spawn some more.

Very nice, good choice Larry. In the past I have kept borelii and hongsli, but your macmasteri sure are tempting me. In your experience they work well as a pair? (Just asking as some Apistogramma species work better as a harem)

..very nice, Larry....I stole a couple of your pics to show some folks ....I'll be watching for some of these locally. I agree, you can't just have one thing going in the fish room.....just too many beautiful fish out there to keep, and learn about.

These fish are beautiful. Can they be kept in a community tank with other bottom dwellers like Cory Cats?
