Brand new tank ran 3 months, swapped from smaller using most of old filter media bare bottom with raised plant bed

    7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.

100% RO with added discus minerals and kh....stays between 6.5 and 6.7. pH monitoring with co2 control system.

    8. Parameters and water source;

Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.

    - temp _29.5__

    - ph __6.6__

    - ammonia reading __0__

    - nitrite reading _0___

    - nitrate reading ___5_

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

    - well water ____

    - municipal water ____

    - RO water ___100_

    9. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.

    Hi Benjie,
I'm no expert, but maybe I can help bump this. The white patches almost look like ammonia burn, or maybe a bacterial problem, both of which could be helped by up-ing your water changes. How long ago did you add the wilds and were they quarantined first? How often and how much water do you change?

Hi....thanks for your reply. I tested today for ammonia, and is zero....filter is established for years. I change 1/3 tank volume twice daily with mineralised RO, preheated and areated.

How long ago did you add the wilds and are they ill as well or is it just your existing fish that are sick?

Wilds seem ok. They came from a very reputable dealer. They have been in for 2 weeks.

Im guessing its probably a bacterial or viral issue. It can happen when fish are mixed.Sometimes it clears up on its own after a few days.Liz asked an important question. How long after mixing the fish did you see the problem start?

Let's hope it's not viral. It's usually just a bacterial thing.

I don't think it parasitic. I'd go with Nitrofurazone or Furan 2 at the high end of the recommended dosage. There used to be fizzy tabs that had the same stuff that was available at any pet store. Even my Walmart sold it! It's the same stuff. If you can't find it Jehmco has first two meds I mentioned. If you're freaking and have money out I'm pretty sure that they can overnight it to you.

Cross contamination can easily happen when you introduce new fish. The new fish can carry pathogens that they had been exposed to in the past and had become immune to. They infect your existing fish that had never been exposed to it. If you had known what you were looking for you would have spotted it sooner. This is never the fault of the seller. It's the fault of the new owner who decides that QT isn't necessary.

I had the same thing in my contest thread and spotted it 4 days after symptoms started. You might want to check that thread out. What I'm advising you to do is exactly what I did.

Thanks for the feedback. I did quarantine, but obviously not properly. Guessing its a bacterial infection then? Is really wierd that the fish swim in the bubble curtain as if their skin is irritated

Have read your thread Liz thanks. have don emore research and am convinced that they all have velvet disease, as they show all the symptoms.Problem i have now is that your sayong its bacterial, and others on web say its a single celled parasite. We dont have antibiotics like Furian 2 unless we get from vets. Am treating the velvet with waterlife protazin, no uv, 30+ temp and lights off.

I understand that you have to take a fish to the vet to get a scrip. I looked up the ingredients in protozin. It contains copper sulfate and malachite green. The label says that it's effective against Velvet but I have no personal experience with it. I bet Al would know.

I would for sure lower the temp in your tank to 82F.
