Default Anyone still keep the old school type discus like turqs ?

Recently got back into Discus after a few years break and wondering if anyone still keeps the old time red turqs and blue turqs ? I just got 4 blue turqs and 3 red turqs (75 gallon) and might try to breed them in the future they are all 5 plus inches and choose the best body shapes and color ..also had a soft spot for turqs gong back to the Watley days
I do also have 13 checkerboard pigeons (200 gallon ) and 8 rafflesia discus (90gallon) all in separate tanks ..

From what I’ve read here they are still very popular. What’s not to love? My blue Turk is my favorite. Shhh don’t tell the others I said that....

Seems like people like the designer strains better like tiger turqs and exotic patterns .. If I could get a group of wild royals with nice shape without giving a kidney I would in a heartbeat ...

In my view, a discus is not a discus unless it looks like a wild fish. Blue edge on a black halo - nothing compares.

There are so many color forms and strains of discus availible now that it hard to not find something that tickles your fancy. Every year theres something new...some of these fade over time on the "whats hot whats not "list.

Good Red turqs are always appreciated though, as are cobalts and blue turqs. . these are some of my favorites.

Theres a bunch of old strains that I wish were still common. You just dont see nice specimens of them being sold as much or few still , bred locally.

Yep, these are discus. The yellow, red and chequer board abominations are not!

I agree that nothing compares to that look, but I refer to nolefan’s response about it costing a kidney. Too funny!

Good thread! I believe a turq is a must have fish in all tanks no matter how common it seems to be.
I recently acquired some very nice turqs that have been select bred for several years by a local hobbyist here in Utah.
These are the ones I picked-

Than whats new this year Al?

I personally love turqs, I don't think anyone would disagree in saying that turq, blue diamonds and snake skins generally have the best shape out of all the strains.

Does this count as a old school? I know it’s a high back, or so I think 😊

I'd say that's a high body, and it's been line-bred for it's colors and pattern. Nice fish, but not old school. I recently returned from the NADA show in New Jersey. There were quite a few nice wilds there. I keep domestics, but one of the things that struck me was how much of the "turk"patten is present in some wilds. There are many "improved" turk strains out there, but I think the basic turk will always be around.

Pat just posted the last of the pics of fish at the recent NADA show. The final group are the wilds. A couple of them could almost pass for domestic turks.
