Default Red Melon(golden based) x Golden Rafflesia

    Hi Guys,

So I got this pair formed in my big tank and I decided to give it a try.
Male is a red melon and female is golden rafflessia. Does anyone know,
How the fry will turn out to be ? I was thinking a batch of both and a mystery combination ?

Thanks Daniel! Rafflesias can be both pigeon based or golden based. Golden based are originally pigeon based as well
But a clean version, where they manage not to pepper. But there are chances to pepper very little if it’s a not a true golden based.

Thank you Sanjay...your fish are stunning...I am trying to understand the genetics of discus a little better...but mostly I lack knowledge when it comes to what can be bred with what to get nice fry, LOL...I haven't even got my discus yet and I am thinking about such things...hard not to really once you see pics of good parents rearing their fry...

They are both pigeon fish, only difference is the base color.
    You'll get pigeon offsprings...

Pure golden based have no pigeon genes. It's very rare and the male is very hard to breed.

I was told by a friend of mine who used to own a discus breeding farm in Penang that pure golden genes discus are very weak genetically.

For some unknown reasons, some will totally stop eating and waste away.
Even if they reached adulthood, some males are not really keen to breed (like panda bear).

Yes, I heard similar story. The original are
the color similar to albinos but without the albino eyes with no black and freckles
on their fins. To make it more easier to breed local breeders cross the pure with
yellow pigeon thats where the yellow color
develope. The frosting on the cake was now it could be mass produce $$ and at the same time the pure golden are lost but
    the name remains.

I had trouble having the fry attaching to the parents so I switched the lights to blue and there you go almost in an hour fry
Attached. Hope this will help anyone who is having trouble having pigeon based fry find parents.

Genius! You are a real fish whisperer. The fry really stand out in the blue light. This is an exciting thread.

Haha thanks Patty! I shall not take the credit for this idea, it was one of my local breeder who once told me about this and I've tried this method in the past (last year) and surely worked.
I'm very curious to see how these babies will turn out to look like, hope they show differences soon cause I'm not planning on raising them for a long time. But if my wife wants to keep them, my plans will change lol

very cool Sanjay. Glad that worked for you and you shared it. I usually just drop the water to the fishes back and remove the sponge for a day.

Hope these guys turn out well for you. guessing you will see a bunch of gold mellons and some peppered pigeons.
