Woohoo Liz, it's about time...now I can uncross everything
Pat
Remember the pair I removed from the contest tank because the female was terrorizing the other Discus and the male was almost sterile and the few wigglers they did manage to get were eaten while they were still on the cone? They have finally had success! I put a cage over the cone this time.
The female laid a decent number of eggs but as before, there were few wigglers. The pair fanned them and were both dark with slime, but there were so few that instead of free swimming as a great mutiny they would break free one at a time and be eaten as they left the cone. I knew I would find out this morning and this morning he babies are feeding off mom and dad.
This is the first bit of success I've had in a long time. God knows I was due for a bit of good luck.

Yipeee! I’m so happy for you Liz!

If the discus are happy, I’m happy
Almost enough babies were attached this morning when I posted and also before I removed the breeding cone before my leaving for my doctor appointment. After I got back this afternoon there were three left. After WC this evening I haven't even bothered to look.
It's OK. I'm used to this. I'll try again with the same pair. If it keeps not working I'll decide how best to proceed. This is a time I might even consider artificially raising. Can you point me to a link on how to do it please, Al? It's not the male's fault that he has little juice in him. He's a show quality fish and he and this female, who herself is no slouch, produced my best fish.

Bummer Liz!
I can walk you through I have done it based off wattleys articles but theres other ways.Cliff has a system he routinely uses and would be a good resource....

Liz you might want to try pulling the cone after they lay.rhe eggs and use methylene blue in a hatching tank to see if your hatch rate goes up.

Thanks, Al. I'll pull the next spawn and see. I'll read the threads when I get home from work this afternoon.

Al, I was planning on doing what you said even though this morning there were still those 3 babies on the parents. This afternoon after work I saw more babies that were were not there yesterday. Before I removed the cone, dad was still blowing some kids back on it. I had wondered if he'd started blowing them on the sponge. That must be what he did.
The babies I see this afternoon were on the silicone. It's clear silicone but the tank is old and there is some algae creeping into the edges of it. They must have been getting some nutrition from it.
What I did was turn down the sponge so that it was barely bubbling and shooed the babies off the sides of the tank. I also got my old San Francisco brine ship from the deep freeze and started it.
You know my feelings about artificial raising. It's not something I would do just for the joy of succeeding in having done it. For now, I'm going to keep the kids in the tank and hope for the best. I don't need a huge spawn from this pair, just enough to give me something to work with. I will only do a tiny WC on this tank this evening. I can get away with it because the tank is a 40 cube. I will see what I have tomorrow and take it from there.

It worked. Don't laugh, I have 7 little babies attached and I plan to grow them out. As soon as the pair starts laying again I will set up a 10 gallon (wish I had a smaller tank) and move the kids over.

Way to go Liz!

The babies went for the BBS for the first time this morning. The moment the pair show signs of wanting to spawn again their 10 gallon is ready and waiting.
