Cool What is the youngest age for discus to breed?

Ok, so,,, 2 (obviously) of my discus just bred in my main tank.

The thing is, I just had these guys for a few months.
I bought them when they were 3"+- and now they are 4"-4.5"

AND THEY STARTED TO BREED... OMG.

Well, not that I'm complaining or anything,,,
but it's seemed a bit too early for them. (glad that I don't have a daughter!)

Well, the worst case, I might just bought a stunt one (damage done, no biggie).

Also, this one in the photo, is she a female?

(It was kinda dark and I couldn't see which one laid the eggs... )

and... her mate... is the yellow-orange golden on her left...

I did hope she would choose someone more or less of similar color... oh well...
    (disclaimer: I'm not a racist!)

They had almost a hundred eggs laid on the back side of Java fern leaf...
But all eggs were gone an hour later... the parents just ate all of them.

    Better luck next time!

At 3+ months old a discus growing at a normal rate would be about 4 months old and you say you have had the several months which would put them at 7 months or so. That said, your discus do look stunted. Normally discus don't mature enough to breed till 9 months ( which is early) but normally around 12 months old. The one that can be seen clearly (the turq) has a very large eye to body ratio and the pointed head instead of rounded is another indicator.

Thank you Larry for your reply.

Yeah, I suspected that she's kinda somewhat stunted, but I got her with GREAT price... so... couldn't resist lol.

Also, any suggestion if she's a she?
Her tube seems pointy,,, from my untrained eyes though.

I agree with Larry here but will also say that females will often start laying eggs as soon as 6-8 months.. but males may go through the motions but be infertile until older (12-18 months). So you may get a pair form...have a female lay eggs... but the male shoots blanks or mostly blanks if he is young.

Exciting stuff no doubt. Make sure not to separate them from the main tank for at least a few months. You want all their resources going into growth not baby making.

Al and Adam, thank you for your replies
Yeah, I'll try not to move them but now this couple is trying to claim 1/3 of the tank (150g).
