Default Discus shops at world's end

    Hello all,

I'm Cyrus. I am at world's end (more specifically, a city called Bangkok, Thailand).

Today I went to "JJ" fish market and snapped some photos from discus shops.

Just would like to share you guys/gals of discus quality/price around here, please enjoy.

*Warning: Sorry for low quality photos/off focus/blurry/glares, due to my phone/photography skill *

First shop, it supposed to offer the best quality discus (mostly imported from Malaysia),,,
but it still closed, so, snap-shots from outside...

I have no idea about the price of any discus in above photos though.

But this guy is about 140$

Second shop, also imported from Malaysia,

These photos don't do justice for these guys... they are massive like 6.5-7.0"+
    These are starting from 450$

Thank you for the photos and giving us an idea about their retail price in Thailand, any idea about what breeder in Malaysia they come from?

    Hi Paul,

As far as I know, some are from IP Discus Malaysia, Jackson Keong, also Ricky Lim (not in these photo).

Thanks for showing us what’s on the other side of the world. We pay around $45:00 for a 2.5 inch quality fish here. $3-7 for juvies is unheard of. Those snakeskins are incredible. Really cool way to start my day seeing discus in Bangkok. Are these for sale in a large retail store or are there many small shops selling these beauties? I’d find them very hard to resist.

    You're welcome guys/gals.

    Patty,

There are literally hundreds of small pet shops (some are just stands, mostly are 150 sq.ft. and up)
in this so called "Sunday market", in which "fish market" is a big part of it.

There are 3 "discus only" shops in this area as far as I know and some other shops also sell them here and there.
Those snakeskin couple was breathtaking to say the least. They're wider than my head... and they spawn almost weekly.

    >I'd find them very hard to resist.

Well,,, you can ask my 18 discus...

It is really cool to see what is available elsewhere discus-wise Cyrus. I would say you have some very nice discus available to you. It would be really cool to see some of your discus. I think you phone/photo skills are quite good.

I agree with Pat about your photo skills and seeing some pics of your 18. I see I’m not the only one who would find them hard to resist! I would be bankrupt in Bangkok and have to spend my time looking at my prized snakeskins. Ha ha

And to think that I was there in 1973 and was buying jewelry and little elephants! Now I would be looking for discus. Thanks for all the photos.

Barb, I lived in Singapore from 1977 until 1980 and visited Malaysia & Thailand several times each while I was there, which was were I was first introduced to the discus world.

I learned during that time that Singaporean and Malaysian discus breeders overall/ generally speaking, produced good quality discus, whereas Thailand had the reputation that some of their breeders were not entirely ethical in that they grew out discus using various hormones and color enhancers to improve export sales.

I understand that rep improved a good deal over the past 15 or more years, and the good quality of discus now being produced is by far the rule with very few exceptions. The apparent quality of the discus shown here by snxtif seems to be a testament to that.

While there I also collected beautifully carved little jade elephants for small dollars each at the time - brought about 10 of them home to Canada, but regrettably gave them all away over the years, and haven't a single one left.
