    Default fluval 406

Good Morning... new to the hobby and just setting up. I purchased a 406 with a sponge filter backup in case of power outage (can run that on battery powered pump)

My question is the 406 comes with 4 baskets and I would like to get as good a setup as I can

the bottom basket has the BIO FOAM which I plan to keep

2nd basket was planning on Seachem Matrix (I read that it is better than what is supplied)

they ship with 2 baskets of carbon which I had read is not so hot except when treating with medication (wonder if its ok while I cycle tank to be removed afterword).

My thoughts were to put Purigen in the top basket with a polishing pad

but the third basket is where I am wondering whats best. I will have enough matrix in the 2nd basket for a 100 Gallon and my tank is only 65 so I am guessing more matrix is not needed.

Thanks in advance for any comments

Remove the carbon. You can never have enough matrix. The more you have the better the reduction of nitrate. Otherwise your plan sounds good.
