Like clockwork, these guys spawn every 4 days or so...had wigglers the last 2 spawns but they ate them despite adding the divider before the previous spawn to last nights...maybe this time we'll go free swimming...

I'm loving my journey back to a species only discus tank. Still plan to add plants, just haven't got around to it as yet...

More just to help break up some lines of sight to help reduce aggression, but lately it's been pretty well controlled, so maybe not necessary. Separating the proven pair seems to have fixed the problem...

Danny, I would suggest using driftwood for line of sight barriers. Way easier then plants if you need something like that in the future.

I do have some anubias on the wood. If you plan to add plants try avoiding plants in their usual area where they lay eggs.

Thank you Sanjay, that means a lot coming from you. There seems to be a strong golden/yellow base beginning to emerge on my red melons that wasn't evident when I 1st got them. I think not feeding food red enhancers is partly responsible for that. I think I like it too, so that's a plus!

That's good advice about plant placement on the wood. I'm actually thinking about getting a cone for the happy couple. I think it might help the laying/fertilizing process having a broader surface, as well I wonder if being on wood makes the eggs more prone to fungus...

    Cheers mate!!

Good to know Pat, thank you. The pair is very diligent to clean the surface. I am surprised by the shortness of the "gestation" period. That prob helps as well...

Did you see the cone sale going on now? I think it’s under heading “GOOB” in the threads.
    Your fish look amazing btw!

    G'day Patty.
I did see the cone sale thread that Barb started. I appreciate you pointing me to it!

So 2 spawns now in the section separated by the divider, and neither resulted in wigglers as the 1 previously. They still laid on a piece of wood, albeit a different skinnier piece in the sectioned of area. Joe suggested I get a cone in there in place of the wood. Same source water and aging process, same feeding and wc schedule. Any other ideas or suggestions as to why no more wigglers?
    Thanks

Hi Daniel - I just finished reading all the posts on your thread. Your discus are beautiful! And congratulations on the spawn activity. Although I do not have any advice for you, I am interested in what others have to say given I am in the same situation. My recent order from Kenny resulted in 3 pairs spawning in the community tank. 2 pairs will get to wigglers before eating them. In the next week I plan on moving all but the three pair to a grow out tank to see if this aids the pairs in getting some free swimmers. Good luck!

Thank you Nate! I have been reading your thread as well, and am keenly interested in how things progress once you remove the other 12 discus. What strain mixes are your pairs?
I am surprised, since separating the pair that had wigglers, that they haven't had a viable brood in the 2 spawns since. Nothing has changed except the introduction of the divider.
Anyway, looking forward to hearing of your progress mate, and I will certainly update here as things develop in my end!
    All the best to you!
