    Default Deformed fry

So what makes some of a fry batch missing/deformed on the front section of their dorsal fin? About a third of the batch have this issue and the rest are fine.

I had this a long time ago after I moved to Mobile. The Kh was higher there. I told my guru at the time, Cary Strong, about it and he said that my high was the problem. I started adding RO to my water for grow outs and the problem disappeared.

Thanks for the quick replies. Jeep I have Discus Essential but refrained from adding it to the fry tanks. I also do reefs so I have calcium readily available too. Also to AL's point I do feed BBS heavily. So I have a few things to tweak on the next batch, got two pairs that laid yesterday.

I just threw that out there for educational purposes as it was a good discussion. However, my results may contradict what Liz said. I will add that I only experienced this problem with the Santarems and no other strains. I think Troy's involved some PB Goldens, which originally cam from me, but I never experienced the problem with the Goldens

The batch I had issues with are about 6 months old now so can't really tell you. I have well water and mix with RODI, more RODI for hatch and fry. Try to keep PH about 7.0-7.3, found that if I drop below 7 then it tends to drift down ward rapidly because of stripped RODI chemicals. Temp is 83. TDS 50-60 for hatch and then between 80-120 PPM there afterwards.
