Hi Dave, instead of feeding the flies once they reach adulthood feed instead in the larvae state.

I picked up a fruit fly trap which is a glass container with a hole in the bottom and a neck at the top that has a cork stopper.
I put a small amount of apple core in this trap and hung it above the kitchen sink where we are having some fruit flies show up.
I plan to take this when it has flies in it and submerge in the 75 gallon tank and when fully submerged to remove the cork and float the flies to the surface of the tank as tank water will enter the trap from the bottom hole.
This is only as a treat to the fish much like me squishing pond snails to the inside of the tank.

I don't know if I will get larvae in these traps. The traps are a miniature version of a glass Yellow Jacket / paper wasp trap I use, and in those I use hummingbird food as the attractant.
