oh yeah garlic
Hi all,
I'm really new to this forum and taking care of discus on my own but I wanted to try my hand at making my own discus food. I probably have made mistakes so please be quick to point them out. That doesn't mean I will agree with ya. It's meaning I want to hear ALL ideas and reasoning. Ok here it goes.
My Alaskan Blend
1 pound of Herring--caught ourselves
2 pounds of salmon--again self caught
1 pound halibut---you get the picture
1/2 pound razor clams (all I had left)
2 pounds of moose liver--didn't buy that in the store.
3 eggs
1/2 cup flour
1 bag of frozen peas
2 scoops of puppy replacer (I breed yorkies)
I whipped it all together in the food processor and wa la. THEIR EATING IT.
oh yeah garlic

I personally would have left out the flour, eggs and puppy replacer (milk) I just thik it will disolve into the water an do nothing but foul the water. Meats, look good I think the herring and salmon have more oils than I would like. Clams? no experience with those. If you were looking to bind it all together with the eggs and flour and milk, I would have used somthing like agar agar or gelatin or a gel fish food like Repashy but with the size of your discus, I wouldn't bind it together until they get larger.
Rick thinks pretty much the same thing that I think. You can buy gelatin in any supermarkedown here. I'm sure you could find it on Amazon. Nix the Moose liver, too. Liver, even from a wild killed animal is very fatty and towels the water fast. The oysters are nutritious for sure. But have used clams.

Thanks Liz...duly noted.
Nice looking group of fry you have there.
If you still have the moose heart you could substitute the liver for it...heart muscle is super lean...just trim off the blood vessels, valves and the membranes so you have pure heart muscle. I used deer hearts myself (you get the picture ) and my fish love it!
Thanks Danotaylor. Good advice on the heart over the liver.
Sounds like a good meal, what times Dinner? I will be right over!
Like the others , The eggs, flour and puppy replacer is just going to make you work harder at keeping the water quality clean. The peas are not bad but if you have any trouble with the fry and Bloat, blame the pea shells. Sometimes they are too hard for small discus.... Next time around definitely get rid of the liver and substitute cleaned heart meat,, Ripe bananas are a good binder as well as any flake food.. I used to use spirulina flake when I made a homemade mess, I mean Mix You can substitute cooked and pureed collard greens or baby spinach for peas, You can also substitute any edible seaweeds you can find since it sounds like you are on the coast. I would add a vitamin mix as well... Doesn't need to be fancy.. I used to use powdered one a days mens or womens vitamin... 1 pills per lb mix is fine. On the clams... Keep the amount low, or cook them briefly they are high in Thiaminase which breaks down Vit B1. Oysters would be a better substitute, but pricey.
