I am a regular cyclist, having rode 5000 miles this year. But, no triathlons for me. I came to cycling from marathoning days - wore down my left knee area.
So I recently decided to join my wife, who has been doing triathlons for a year now. Bought a bike, quit smoking and started cycling and running. Swimming lessons will start next month. Since I’m well out of shape, the goal is to be able to complete a sprint race by next season.
Just wondering if there are any triathletes or even Ironmen on here.

Cool. I’ve really only just started out, and I’m still getting used to the bike and the literal pain in the a$$ that comes with riding it. I find the road bike is worse than the tt bike. But then, I only had a handful of rides on each so far.
So what kind of cycling do you do?
Invest in a good saddle, Tobi. They make ones with a cut out in the middle. Men loveit.
No triathlons for me. The only thing I'm good at in the water is staying up. My feet aren't made for running. They aren't deformed but they can't even run a mile. I used to race bicycles. One of the guys I trained with did triathlons and completed at least one Ironman.

Yeah Liz, the TT bike has a saddle like that. And I’m wearing the padded shorts etc.
I’m very heavy at 240 lbs, so that doesn’t help.
My wife is going to do the Ironman 70.3 here in Dubai in February. My goal is to do the half Ironman in 2022, snd then a full one in 2023.
I do road cycling. So far, rides 110 miles and under. I have done some road mountainous climbs.
If you are having pain on the bike then what you need is a good bike fit. They are pricey and take several hours. It's one thing to build up sitting. It's another to have pain. Pain can come from a multitude of items - not just the saddle. A good saddle will fit the spacing of your sit bones. A good saddle beyond that is highly individualistic.
Don't just get anyone to "fit you to the bike." Sometimes the bike doesn't fit you.
No tri's just duathalons. Many miles running and biking.
Just make sure you are fit right to your bike. A bike shop
in your country should be able to do that. Otherwise go to you tube.
A wrong saddle position can wreck havoc on your knees plus
make for very inefficient biking.

No tri's for me. I am a cyclist at 360 pounds 6'3", and I ride a 2013 Orbea Orca in 60cm with Rolf wheels, and Maxxis Padrone tubeless tires. I use a cutout saddle (SMP Pro).
I recommend tubeless tires.
My rides have been 55 miles or less.
Cycling has helped me drop weight from 406 to my current 360 and keep the weight off for four years.
Good luck to you.

I do have a bike, running shoes and swim trunks all in long term storage.
I am a Dad-Hub-Triathlete...I get a request from one daughter and get another request from the second daughter and not long after my wife gets me to do another chore. Lol... I forgot does it count when the dog looks up at me requesting to go for a walk.
All joking aside Tobi...your making a great decision in your life and only helps that your wife is already a veteran.

I'm embarrassed to admit but I am whats called an endurance sprinter.. I Sprint from one kids event to another, race to my parents to care for them, race home to take care of the fish and pack and ship orders, and put out fires. Then I hit the wood pile and split and and stack wood for the the winter warmth, and repeat..This is my winter exercise routine. I try and give the muscles some rest though with periodic outings with the camera that force me to slow down. You'd think I should be in shape with all that running but I am not..
I do dream of doing long distance thru Hikes... I almost did the Appalachian Trail once. lol.. but never did,. 10 months was too much time I did not have... Most I can find time for is the day hikes right now.. Some day though when things calm down, I see some long Distance hiking in my future.

Jeez Frank, 110mi is quite the ride. I seem to be more of a sprinter. So far anyway
The first thing I did with both bikes is to go to a specialist bike fitting shop. So I'm covered, but excellent point.
The other more experienced riders tell me it takes time to get used to it, and it is getting better
That's exactly the plan. I've read from a lot of people that if hey could go back and start over, they would take more time to build up to the longer races/distances.
Awesome Jay. There are a couple duathlon races here in the UAE every year, definitely planning on doing one eventually.
Re bike fit, thanks for the advice, I'm sure a lot of people overlook it or want to save money at the wrong end. Did one straight away and am free to come back for readjustments anytime
Great Dave, well done on the weight loss.
I've actually recently been on Rolf's website, nice wheels and right in your neck of the woods.
I'm waiting for a good local deal on used aero wheels for the TT bike.
Ralph, anything that keeps us off the couch and our hands off the chips and chocolate is a win, so definitely counts.
See, hikes I couldn't do, they do my back in. Cutting wood is a hell of an exercise though!
