Default Angelfish excreting stringy poop with mucous lining

    Hey guys,

I request you to advice me on treating my sick fish. I think I'll better start by filling up the questionnaire.

    1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?

About 2 or 3 angelfish are excreting stringy poop with mucous lining. I started noticing the mucous lining moving around and settling in the bottom of the tank some 5 weeks back. I wasn't sure if it came from the angelfish or the discus and then a week later i found out it was from the angelfish. The angelfish were sold to me as Mancapurus and they've still got a lot of growing up to do.

    2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).

Darting happens with them very occasionally, maybe when I present myself before the tank without prior warning/in poor external lighting.
Sometimes the affected angels squirt light white/yellow creamy paste about 1cm in length multiple times while excreting poop.
All the fishes are eating great and they don't seem to have lost any appetite. I feel like angels haven't shown any growth at all.

    3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.

I haven't tried anything yet, I asked for my seller's input and he advised me to treat with pyrantel and they use it for treating worms in dogs. Upon further research I found out that they could cause neural toxicity in fishes and hence abandoned the whole idea.

    Tank/Water

    4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.

    Tank size - 48"x 18"x 18" - 67 US gallons.

    Stocking :

    4.5" - 5.5" discus (x 3)
    Manacapuru angelfish (x 5)
Guianacara geayi (x 5) The biggest one is about 2.5" and the rest are more like 1.75"-2"
    Harlequin rasbora (x 11)
One blue ram passed away recently, he had been with me for close to 1.5 years. No casualties otherwise.

    5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).

    Weekly once, 40%

    6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?

The tank was converted into a discus tank with sandy substrate, few java ferns and anubias from a CO2 supplemented, planted one in Feb' 18. It was later converted to a bare bottom tank some 4 months back IIRC. So, right now, it is a bare bottom tank with side panels and back panel painted black with 2 PVC elbows as decorations for the Guianacara.

    7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.

I have the water in storage for close to 3 days after collecting from the tap, no additional oxygenation/ agitation prior to adding it to the tank. I add Seachem Prime as per the instructions on the bottle after adding the new water into the tank.

    8. Parameters and water source;

Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.

    - temp __27'C___

    - ph __N/A___

    - ammonia reading __N/A__

    - nitrite reading __N/A__

    - nitrate reading __N/A__

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

    - well water ____

    - municipal water __100%__

    - RO water ____

    9. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.

The angels were the last fishes to be added to the tank

    10. Please tell us what you feed your fish and how often. This can be critical information for solving the problem so be as specific as you can.

9 A.M - ON Prime reef flakes / Northfin Cichlid 2mm pellets soaked in water / Seachem garlic guard
8 P.M - Northfin Cichlid 2mm pellets soaked in water / Seachem garlic guard

    11. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.

Sorry about the poor quality of the pics and window reflections.

I'll try to post a full tank shot after doing a water change and cleaning the bottom mess.

Happy Christmas holidays guys, have a great weekend.

yellow feces can be a sign of worms. that combined with the seller steering you to a dewormer would make me think he knows they have worms so I would deworm them. most fish meds have side effects of some sort

    Hi Jim,

Thank you for your quick response. So, should I start with epsom salt or Prazi with pyrantel or metronidazole/flagyl treatment ? I also come across Flubendazole mentioned a lot in this forum. Appreciate your help.

I agree with Jim that the feces could indicate worms.. that yellow often times indicates capillaria or some other nematode.

I would not recommend pyrantel for fish. Levamisole is much safer and well known as a dewormer. You can use it as a bath or in flakes.

Angelsplus sells several dewormer flakes... Either the fendendazole one or the levamisole one would be good options.

Thanks Al and Jim. I can’t seem to find angels plus food here in India, can I use levamisole tablets from the drug store ? Can you please suggest me the recommended dosage, thanks.

The dose is 1 gram per 100 gallons (or 1 gram per 379 liters) of pure levamisol, for a 24-hour bath, followed by a few days of very large water changes. Repeat the treatment in 10-14 days.

How much active ingredient does each tablet contain?

    Hi Dan,

I got the Levamisole tablets today and each tablet contains 50mg of Levamisole. I got a hospital tank with dimensions 24"L x 12"B x 15"H which roughly translates to 70 litres. I prefer the bath method to the oral administration of the drug. Your recommended dosage is 2.65 mg/L and I'll stick with it. Do I have to maintain any specific temperature and can I stick to my original feeding schedule ? By large waterchanges do you mean 100% every day ? Appreciate your help, thanks.

This appears to be nematodes, and if that is the case the infected fish have been shedding worm eggs into the tank where they are spread to the other fish, so I would recommend treating the whole tank. Temperature at 28C. Water changes should be 80-90% for a couple of days with siphoning of the bottom to remove the medication and to remove nematode eggs, which are not effected by the drug. It looks like you age the water but without aeration, and it would be better if you can add an airstone. You can feed as usual, but they might lose their appetite for a few days.

    Hi Dan,

Thanks for your detailed reply, I've started them on the Levamisole bath an hour ago. I'll keep you guys updated and wish you all a Happy New Year.
