Poop. It's thought that it gives the fry a headstart. If left with the father, they usually stay until day 20-22 but start eating day 11. It's also been suggested they chew on his snout a bit.
adam, what do you mean... some waste from the parents?

Makes sense for a critter with lots of wood fibers in diet.
Rabbits do similar.

Day 7: One failed to develop around the second or third day. The remaining seven look healthy.

When are you shipping these to SD forum members??
I love seeing pics of these as they develop. They are beautiful even when they are riding on beach balls.
Mama Bear
No buyers yet. Trying to get a big group of F1's for future breeders.
Color and pattern develop pretty quickly but fade with age. Zebras stay pretty for the most part, but some of the larger hypancistrus species get kind of bland.
I was thinking of calling that one Mordecai (kidding... I don't name fish).
Thanks, Liz. They only get along like this during the first few months. After that, they're grouchy, solitary things.
Day 9: Only a couple more days before feeding starts. They might be nibbling on the walnut leaf pieces a bit already, but their yolk sacs are still large enough to sustain them. There is also a larger piece of oak leaf for them to hide under when I'm not bothering them.

Nice!
You know, I have seen people buy up large groups of the wild ones for years with the intention of starting breeding colonies, but I have never seen anyone actually post results from that or selling tank-raised fry. I am not a catfish/pleco guy so maybe I've just missed out on that.
Either way, it's awesome to actually see some being spawned and raised. Congratulations on the fry. Are the spawns always relatively small? I guess that could explain the price and the demand for them.
Wow, this is awesome.
