Default Sick Discuss - Need Help ASAP

    Hi,

My Discus has suddenly taken ill. It was healthy and spawning a week back and has been continuously spawning for months now.

    Symptoms :

Body color has turned black - Its a blue turquoise
Barely able to swim around, lays at the bottom of the tank, moves around, swims in circular motion, sometimes violently

Its right now quarantined and in an Epsom bath.
I have a video that I am not able to upload because of the size.

    Thanks,
    Santhosh

    Update:

    Additional information :

It lays at the bottom or rests upright for sometime
Then when able swims to the top and when swimming part of the fins is out of water
Intermittently darts and then swirls (swims in circles) at a very fast pace almost violent
Sometimes has what looks like seizures

I have never seen anything like this. Not able to find any reference also.

Water Temp - 30 deg. centigrade - there is a heater on
No medication yet only Epsom salt

Please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

Hi Aquadaft, sorry to hear about your fish How much Epsom salt did you add to the water? Also in this case I do not think the elevated temperature is helpful but instead is an additional stressor for the fish (making it breath harder). Can you please lower the temp to 86F.

    Hi Pat,

86F is about 30C. I checked once after reading your message and he is huddled in between the heater and the tank wall, so I think for now she is comfortable there. I added about 3 to 4 spoons to about 15 gallons of water.
Any clue on what this might be?

    Sam

I actually don't Sam. However I am going to suggest you change 50% of the water and add 1 tablespoon of regular salt per gallon to the tank water. This is to help the fish deal with whatever stress it maybe dealing with. Do you see any slime coat shedding?

Its 8 PM in Bangalore and the temp is around 73F, Pat. Would you suggest that I do the water change now or in the morning? I don't see any slime shedding. Though I noticed that the eyes are covered with something whitish not completely. I am not sure it is able to see properly. Also there might be a slight enlargement of one eye or might be a slight bulge. The body is gone black and there is a sort of while covering, I thinking that is slime.

Something is probably off with your water Sam, Have you tried adjusting the pH at all. What I see in the video looks like pH/alkalinity burns or some other kind of chemical. Pats suggestion on the salt is a good one, but we need some more info on your water and the history of the fish.. PLease fill this out and cut and paste it here...http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showth...lease-complete

    1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?

Body color has turned black - Its a blue turquoise
Barely able to swim around, lays at the bottom of the tank, moves around, swims in circular motion, sometimes violently

The fish has been aloof and not with the pack for a couple of days, lost a bit of color yesterday and then today displayed the above.
The only thing unusual is that it jumped out to the tank last week, don't know the cause might be skirmish with one of the other discus

There are two other discus which are absolutely fine.

    2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).

It lays at the bottom or rests upright for sometime
Then when able swims to the top and when swimming part of the fins is out of water
Intermittently darts and then swirls (swims in circles) at a very fast pace almost violent
Sometimes has what looks like seizures

    3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.

    Epsom Salt

    Tank/Water

    4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.
    4ft*2ft*2ft
    5 Cardinals(3 Yrs), 4 Corys(1 Yr), 3 Discus(2.5 years in the tank), 1 Rainbow (4 Yrs)

    5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).
    30%, Weekly Once

    6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?
Tank has been running for 3 years,
ADA aquasoil amazonia about 3 inches

    7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.

Water aged for about a week. I have not checked PH Swing

    8. Parameters and water source;

Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.

(Plant was heavily planted, its over grown now, there is no dosing and I have let the plants just grow wild)

    - temp - 82.4 - 86

    - ph

    - ammonia reading - 0

    - nitrite reading

    - nitrate reading

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

    municipal water

    9. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.
    noting added recently

    10. Please tell us what you feed your fish and how often. This can be critical information for solving the problem so be as specific as you can.

I am not able to get water parameters. My test kit is expired and for tap water, aquarium water and the aged water, it all shows me the same reading. I will have to wait till tomorrow morning to get a test kit.

Sorry to hear this Sam I think it would be a good idea to get that test kit and see what is happening with your water if you have other discus.
