Default How to tell discus age

    Hi

Been a long time, since being here. Hope everyone are doing great.
A close friend of mine recently started a discus tank and I'm thinking of getting back into the game also.
    My friend ordered 8 discus - 4".
They are all active, eating fine good colors and active so looking healthy.
I wasn't to sure when looking at the eye to body ratio. To me the eyes look a bit large, and today he informed me that egg laying has begun.
As far as I know egg laying doesn't start untill appr. 12 months age, which means size should be around 5"?
Let me know if I'm way of and I'll try to get a picture.

Get a pic. 4" is kinda small for laying eggs unless the fish are runts or stunts, unless it's 4" SL rather than TL. The tail and peduncle (I think that's what it's called) can easily add a full inch to the length of a discus.

Female Discus can start spawning as early as 6 months, but this will slow down their growthrate.

The eyes look a little bit large to me.

The eyes are fine. Non PBs often have largish eyes. She looks fat and healthy, as well. I think the got ready early partly due to her excellent condition. The females lay eggs when they are ready. There's nothing you can do do discourage it. She should keep growing well as long as you don't allow her to raise fry. It's the fry feeding off the parents that hurts growth.

    Ok. Thanks for the input.
Eggs are already gone. I'll tell my friend to remove the eggs to avoid less grow.
Seems the breeder he got them from knows his stuff

I think there is a little confusion, when I mentioned
spawning it's the process of ovulation that slows the
growth not the parental raising. The Discus will still
grow but not much, as you can see the fish has already started to grow thicker as she ages.

    I've read the same thing.
Question then is unsolved, as this would indicate a quite small adult discus and not a young fish.

Is that a neon sapphire? If it is, they tend to spawn a lot earlier than other strains. My sapphire pair started breeding at 4 1/2". Had two set of wigglers but too young to know how to darken up for the babies to find them.

I believe it's called 'Blue Diamond'.
My friend doesn't really care about the size. He just want it pretty and healthy 😊
I'm just not sure I want to order from the same place if I risk stunted fish. I guess I have just a little more knowlegde on discus and I want to make sure the fish I get can be grown into big fellas😊

The generic name is Blue Diamond. The breeders name the what is basically the same fish something catchy like Neon Sapphire or Blue Angel to make them seem like something more special.

Casper, your fish look like they come originally from the Stendker hatchery. That is a good thing.

They are from Stendker. Most Discus here are Stendker, as the shipping time and cost are low (just a few hours drive).
But several sellers are selling these and you never know how long they've had them in their own tanks and in what conditions.
I think I'll wait untill a few local stores get new shipments so I can have a look for myself and pick out the ones I want.
