    Default No Beefheart, Seafood Mix

    Hey All,

I thought up an a mostly aquatic food mix. No Beef Heart though I know many swear by it.

    Ingredients Are:
    Frozen BloodWorms
    Maybe some Garlic
    Shrimp
    Kelp or Sea Grapes
    Herring
Multi-Vitamins 1 cap per 3000 grams of food

    Any delicious or nutritious suggestions??

    Cheers
    -Harry

I dont make homemade mixes anymore but I have tried many.

For your recipe I would remove the bloodworms.. just feed them separate if at all. Shrimp , herring, garlic, algae and multivits are fine.

I would suggest adding some flakes or ripe bananas as a binder.Salmon is an excellent fish for its nutritional qualities and will bring out reds in discus. Paprika can also be added to bring out reds and as an attractant. You can also add in chicken or turkey breast to make it more economical.

    hth,

I used to add in Spinach and or Spirulina powder from health food stores to my home made mixes.

In addition to flake or gelatin, dried blackworms are also a very good binder. Pretty sure someone here sells them .

So which commercial brands do you like to use nowadays?
I have some Northfin Pellets which maybe used as a binder?
I never knew Paprika could be used as an attractant, I always thought it was spicy and would repel the Discus.
I am not sure but I think Astaxanthin is the color enhancer in Paprika right?

I think I would try the Spirulina Powder as its an aquatic ingredient and maybe mix it with Paprika.

Not quite...but they both contain related carotenoid pigments. Astaxanthins primarily come from algaes.

Paprika is a good source of red /orange pigments though..

The frozen blood worms may not be a great choice for protein, but won't hurt. There's not a lot of protein, mostly water.Dried would be better, then add some water.
