Hi my name is Kayleigh and I'm from Ireland. I have just gotten my first discus about a week ago and was looking for your expert and honest opinions on the quality of these. I think I definitely got one runt and one stunted but hoping the rest will be ok. All opinions and advice welcome. Thank you.

HI and welcome Kay .
IMO, they are nice loking fish with good growth potential.
One of them is too small and propably won't grow to full size and some of them have slightly pointed shape .
Other than that I really think that you have some nice looking growouts there to look forward to .
Good luck with them , have fun and post progression photos so we can all follow how they develop .
Could one of you smart mods make her pics appear upright, Please.
Kayleigh, Did you order these fish from a breeder or established importer or did you get them from a fish store. Are they all supposed to be the same age?
Mama Bear
Thank you. Ya sorry about the pictures I'm not great with technology and they were the right way when I uploaded them. I got them from an importer who's friend breeds them in Poland. I forgot to ask about age cause I got caught up in picking them. Not much help I know.
My other half just told me that he was told they are more or less the same age.
One of the mods can turn them right. I don't have the power. from what I can see with them sideways, it does appear that you do have a runt. Don't know yet if one is stunted.
I loved it that you asked for an honest opinion. So many folks come here just looking for compliments. I do my best just to keep my mouth shut with that type. Mama Bears have a reputation for honesty.
Mama Bear
Nice looking fish. Good luck with them.
Where do you live in Ireland? I have cousins in Dublin and Cavan.
Been over many times and Ireland never struck me as a fish keeping
country. Now there are 2 folks, that I know of, on this forum from Ireland.

Nice looking fish, i love the color on them
Thanks everyone. Brady it's not trust me, im from mayo in the west. So hard to find any decent quality fish and me and my other half look at peoples fish all over the world and are so jealous. Also so hard to get people to ship to Ireland. That's also why I wanted honest opinions. When I got them I tried so hard so pick good quality and thought the 2 small ones may have been younger but when I got them home I thought it was unlikely and then I started doubting the others and it was slowly driving me crazy. Haha. Iv called them pip squeak and timmy and they'll just be my little friends. mama bear the goal is to hopefully breed them so no point if they're not of good quality.
Hi and welcome. Given the hurdles you have described getting those fish, I think you ended up with a reasonable lot. Even if they were all born from the same batch of eggs some will grow less than others, occasionally even a "runt" can show a good growth spurt and make up for lost time, although I think that more often than not runts tend to stay the smallest. Good water and good food will allow them to develop the best they can possibly become. Keep us up to speed
My discus are not fat...just big fish-boned
Thanks Paul. I do 50% water changes daily and they get fed 4 times a day. Going to start looking into making my own beef heart mix when my next wage comes in. Haha.
I agree with Paul. Overall I think that you should be pleased with them,
Mama Bear
Thank you. Even more excited now. Haha.
Now that they are upright, look real good. Your from Mayo? Not quite Cork or Cavan but I'm sure your
OK.LOL
You might want to try a seafood, chicken and whatever else mix instead of beefheart. Beefheart is a real pain to make ,trimming and all.
I use 1/4 LB salmon, 3 shrimp[don't know if you can get shrimp, maybe prawns] and a 1/4 LB. piece of
chicken breast all chopped up SEPERATLY in a food processor.Mix together, add some dry food, spinach, some garlic powder and a dash of paprika[color for your reds]
Put in a freezer bag smooth it out to about a 1/4 inch, freeze it and your in business.
Any questions pm me.
