    Default Black Background

Hi all, So I have 7 young discus I'm currently growing out. I have kept adult discus Pigeon Blood White Carnation with no experience of peppering. However I have read in many places now that black background are bad. I have brilliant white sand that offsets the black background. Should I play it safe and paint the background a light blue?IMG_6837.jpg

If your PB's are that clean with a black background they are exceptional.

Your pigeon bloods are not showing much peppering, so the light bottom is helping a lot. Also, it helps to have high quality discus that don't have a lot of peppering to start.

One reason I use a light background is that it's hard to take a good picture with black backgrounds. With a light color background, your picture will come out a lot brighter on an automatic aperture. If you're using an SLR, you could compensate with adjusting the F-stop.

BTW, if you slightly crop your pictures they'll show right side up.
At my age, everything is irritating.

Thanks for the tip! I've been wondering how to rotate them! Thanks for the kind words too

How long have you had them? I do find that black backgrounds do darken and pepper discus.

I agree with what Liz said by experience...I had 8 discus in a 125 gal w a black background. 6 we're very clean PB strains from Dennis at Dennis Discus Fish. From the day I introduced them into my tank until the day I sold them on there was never any increase in peppering, in fact, as Liz said, because they were quality PB's, they remained super clean despite the black background. Here's an old pic...the BG looks dark blue due to the flash on my phone cam but it is black...

Over the years, the pigeon blood strain has become more and more refined through the use of selective breeding.

Some of my checkerboard pigeons I had long time ago.

They're beautiful Francis!! I agree for sure. If you buy PB strains from one of the SD sponsors there's a very strong chance all the hard work to breed the peppering out has been done already. I do love me a good pepper free PB strain
