It's not all about size despite when men think. It's more about shape and overall quality. In this case if I were to choose one as a mate for Big Boy, I would choose the fish in the first pic. I know that she (I think that she has a better chance of being female due to her underline) doesn't have the color of the other (which I feel is male) but she doesn't have a bump on her head. Finding the perfect mate for an excellent fish is so hard. I know from experience.

Here he is what possibly appears to be his chosen one. He keeps her cornered in the back of the tank behind the sponge filter and when the other one approaches they both chase it away. I've never seen eggs. I don't think she's quite ready yet...

She, or it, is right behind him and little over 6" and he has it totally blocked. Show off

I hope all the beginners take this point to heart. Large, frequent water changes is the key to growth. Far too much time is focused on less relevant issues, e.g. type of filtration, type of food, pH, kH, etc. To have such a round shaped discus get so big is extremely impressive!

At my age, everything is irritating.

So nice! I want a dinner plate like this!!! and the tail just brings this fish to a different level

I feel like when I first started looking at discus the colors and the patterns are what draw you in, but now that I have them in my tank I'm more into which of them has a better body shape, eye, fins, etc than which one has the best pattern/color. Funny how that works.

Hope he/she makes it to trash can lid status for you

This is something so few newer people to this hobby realize anymore because of the likes of Facebook and discount discus brokers/scammers. It's what quality really is all about!!
