    Default Sodium Thiosulfate

For those who use Sodium Thiosulfate, where do you get it, what brand. cost? How do you use it - pre-mix, just dump in, etc...?

You can buy it on Amazon. I get mine from a place they sell industrial chemicals less than a mile from where I live. I've been using it for many years and is very cheap .I paid $20 for a kg. I use one crystal per 5 gal water. Seems it lasts for ever. I did have the recipe but lost it. It is better not to pre mix it and store it, so says the chemist that works where I bought mine.

Like Mervin said, thiosulfate solutions can generate a sulfur suspension.

So pretty much any Sodium Thiosulfate crystal form is ok? And you just drop it in dry? I ask because there seem to be so many different claimed uses for it.

Here's what I came across. Seems like it would last forever... https://www.amazon.com/THIOSULFATE-P...gateway&sr=8-4

I started getting mine from E bay. It's exactly the same as the one on Amazon. I don't remember how much it was but I do remember that it was cheap. I mix a lb in a gallon of water and yes, it does last forever.

This is totally new for me. Do folks use it instead of Safe or Prime as a dechlor?

I got a bottle of it off of Amazon. Fritz aquatics makes it.

Correct! And you get more for a fraction of the cost...

Liz, is this the one? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sodium-Thio...e174bbdf0b9fc9

That's the one. Exactly the same.

Steve if only does the job if you don't have chlormines in your tap water.

Thanks Liz. I'm on a well, so I don't think that's an issue. So Safe will bind ammonia (ammonium?). Does ST do the same? I have enough Safe to last a while anyways.

Yes. And your well is your own and chlorine is not added to it you don't need to use anything.

Yes, thanks. I haven't tested it in a long time, but I do have boron and some folks nearby even have aluminum in their water. I also wonder about agricultural runoff that might add nitrates. I need to get it tested again. I don't mean to hijack here, but does Safe do anything to remove extra minerals? I really only use it if I haven't change water as often as I should and I want to insure against a mini-cycle or ammonia spike.

It does not. You must have a shallow well if agricultural chemicals are in it. I don't know anything about boron but aluminum in the water is not good.

Let the fish tell you if your fish are doing well. If their healthy and happy and eating well what your doing is fine. If not there is a problem with something.

So I'm reading up and I see that Sodium Thiosulfate breaks the chlorine/ammonia bond but does not neutralize the ammonia. Is this correct? And if I do have chloramines in my tap, is the left over ammonia handled by the bio filter efficiently or do people use something else to neutralize the ammonia? Or should you not use ST f you have chloramines?

Being a bit of a devil's advocate and asking some questions here. I don't really think the ag run-off is an issue. My son is a block away and has some aluminum. We cook with it, but I otherwise don't drink it. I see Brian has a good follow-up question.
