Default 10 Juvi Discus growing them out

    Hi all,

I've got 10 juvi Stendker discus in a 52 gallon fish tank, feeding 6 times per day and growing fast! I do some a 2 guppies, 2 neon tetras and 2 corys... Light sand substrate.

When do i upgrade to a bigger tank? 10 gallons per adult discus so was looking at 118 gallons so i can have some other communal fish.

I only have space for 1 "Large" tank.. The issue is if any of them decide to pair off.

If two discus pair off, do i remove the pair into another tank and put them back once they have babies?

What tank size do you suggest?

    Cheers

    Paul

I have grown out discus from 1 per 5 gallons to 1 to 7.5 gallons. If you are on top of the water changes I do not think that the rule of 1 per 10 gallons is an absolute rule. I stocked a 30 gallon tank in October with 5 4 inch Discus. All are over 6.5 to 7 inches now.

Thanks for the response peewee... So your saying I could potentially grow my 10 discus to adults in a 53 gallon tank?

Hello Paul. If you ever see any discus farm videos you will see that the rule of discus/g of water CAN be a myth, but also keep in mind the conditions these farms keep their discus in. They change water many times a day at times and they feed heavily and they usually sell their discus before adult size. Your tank is very small for this size group considering you also have a substrate and other dither fish. I would already start looking at the "larger" tank which gives you a little more breathing room and room for error just in case. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the response people! I have two options for the size tank:

    92 Gallon
    118 Gallon

Which one would be preferable? I guess bigger the better?

I plan to have a school of cardinal's in there with minimal plants

What are the tank dimensions of both tanks?

    Hi Pat,

There are 3 options for tank sizes:

    121cm x 51cm x 66cm (350 litre tank) - 92 gallons
    151cm x 51cm x 66cm (450 litre tank) - 118 gallons
    151cm x 61cm x 64cm (450 litre tank)- 118 gallons

    Cheers,

    Paul

    I would suggest the third option 151cm x 61cm x 64cm (450 litre tank) - 118 gallons.

Always nice to go bigger because if you did wind up going smaller, you'll just want to go bigger later. With your plans to add plants and a shoal of cardinal tetras (which is what I have as well), I'd suggest going with the taller 118 gallon tank. If you are having a sand substrate, make sure you have fertilizer tabs and that your plants can thrive in that substrate. I'd also would recommend some Sterbia Corydoras or others that would be fine in warmer water temps to keep your substrate clean by kicking up debris that would inevitably end up in your filtration. Be sure to keep up the water changes and good luck growing out your 10 juvies! I'm happy for you!
