Nice Dave! We have had one visiting our flower garden this summer. Sadly the last blossum's died off this week...but a feeder is a good option...

Perfectly captured. I have the little suckers all over my Cyprus Vine, plus I have a feeder right in front to the window they visit often. I wouldn't even think to capture one with my camera. I would get a body surrounded by a blur.

Nice photo! I've got 6 of them fighting over one feeder in front of my picture window but they fly away when I try to take a picture. Mine are all green. I think I need more feeders...

Thank you all for the kind words.

If you don't have a camera that will do high shutter speeds using a flash is a good way to stop the motion of the wings. You might still get some blur, but that adds to the artistic quality of the photo.

This is about as good as I can get before they fly away. This is the first time more than 1 have actually been feeding at the same time...

    Good job Jeep.

I find leaving the door open so I can have the stereo or TV sound masking my movements and any camera noise helps as long as I am sitting inside. Otherwise I have to sit with my back to the wall outside in colors that blend in in order for them to come to the feeder and stay long enough for me to photograph them.

I want to try to capture one my camera. I most often have just one at a time, because they chase the others away. If I set quietly in a chair do you think that my camera could do it on the "sports" setting? It's to capture things that are moving fast. I don't know how to do the shutter speed and aperture stuff. My camera is a Nikon D 40 and my lens is a Nikor 18 to 200. Taking pictures is not in my wheel house.

Yes you could do it.... you might get some blur in the wings, but the body and head should be clear

When I was in the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado there were thousands of hummingbirds zipping all over the place. There was nothing shy about them. Some RV's had 5 or 6 feeders outside the campers and hundreds were feeding at a time. They even pecked on the yellow logo on my hat, and 2 or 3 at a time tried drinking out of my Squirt can while I was drinking. Really cool!!

We had an occurrence this evening that was as challenging to capture as the hummingbirds. Tonight while eating dinner I looked out the dinning room window to see 100s of adult dragonflys swarming. First thing I grabbed was my IPad to shoot video. I thought the camera would be a waste with the numbers and speed they move at. I was astounded at the numbers, I was able to walk out into the cloud and admire them up close. I could hear the wings next to my ears and sometimes their wings would touch and make a sound like playing cards being shuffled. I called the neighbor to tell him and he was outside doing the same thing. They seemed to be feasting on small insects that were hatching out. I would post the video, but not sure which way would be easiest.
