    Down and dirty...

    Great Blue heron

    GB.jpg

Black Backed Gull. Not too common for me here in CT, though we get a few Greater Black Backed Gulls in the winter. This one has me wondering if its actually a Lesser Black Backed.. Not common at all, but we get them from time to time, particularly after storms (which we had this week) Reason I wonder on it is its very small for a Greater Black Back gull. This one is about the size of a Herring gull, and as such may be a lesser black backed. Either way makes me happy, but I would love for it to hang around and be a lesser.

ah well... Its a Greater Black backed Gull according to the bird bible, Peterson's Field Guide. Flesh colored legs=Greater Black Backed...Yellow legs = Lesser Black Backed . Still a good one for today.

    Keep them coming John!

So far it looks like birds only live on the east coast of the USA with an occasional migrant to the midwest.

I wish more people would post bird pics from there area.I would love to see birds I cant see here and may never get to see in person. Maybe people are worried they cant take a good enough picture ? Its not about the picture ..its about the bird which is why I am posting my pics no matter how good or bad they are.

OK Al, you asked for it. I don't think anyone is too unusual, but here are some from my backyard.

Nice!!!!!! Are those Least Goldfinches? The black cap on one looks very cool! We dont have those here in the north east..Just American Goldfinch.

What kind of Jay do you have there, is that a western scrub or stellars jay? Im going have to dig out my guide to western birds. I bought that book 25 years ago and it rarely gets used.

    Thanks for the pics!

I think its a scrub jay. I see the stellar's jays in the mountains around here when we're camping. There's also another jay type I see there that is the same size and shape, but mostly gray and white. The goldfinches I think are seasonal, at least this variety. We get the pale red ones a lot of the time, too.

I don't have much to add here as far as high quality photo's are concerned, but here's one from my front yard... I was wondering why he was so brave to be so close until I saw him fly off with a 5' rat snake, lol... Deck 10-11-05 001.jpg

These are some birds during a shootout at the Cocoa Beach Pier Saturday morning.

Brown Pelicans flying in front of the sunrise lite clouds along the beach.

Frigate birds fly out to sea for breakfast. They were really high so this is the best I could do.

I found this guy driving up my driveway. It is a ground dove and is the smallest native dove in Florida. Very hard to get a good image of due to being small and skiddish.

I went to visit my brother in Venice Florida last week, it was the first time I've seen Frigatebirds. It's nice to get a new one for my life list now and then.

    Nice pictures Pat.

Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker. I don't see many of these around here, not a great picture but a good spot.
