what and when do people medicate their growing fry with over the first month? I’ve seen people using potassium permangenate baths (which terrify me) and all sorts of potions. Do they really need medication if there is no die off and they are all eating/growing well?

Hi Naomi, the worst thing you can do to fry is medicate them. You will want to clean up the parents before they spawn if needed to ensure the fry are given the best chance for a trouble free life.

Thanks pat, that’s exactly what my instincts were telling, but my research was turning up a different result. Appreciate the advice.

Just be sure to do lots of WC. Baby Discus eat and poop a lot and pristine water is the most important thing when it comes to keeping them healthy.

Before you go nutsy cuckoo with water changes I would speak to Pat who has experience with raising fry as far as what to look for when doing your water changes

Do you mind if I ask what results you are referring to Naomi?

There are a number of YouTube clips detailing a pp bath, jack wattley hatchery was the one I watched. Also andrew soh details the same in his book. Also breeders I’ve spoken to locally seem to think the pp bath is absolutely necessary to prevent die off. So even though it terrifies me I was prepared to try it if I absolutely had too, but consistent water changes sound sooo much nicer for the fry and my nerves!

The pp bath basically oxidizes or "burns" off the external parasites. I think the concern is that this could damage gills on young fry, but at least it's not an internal treatment that would affect the young organs while developing. If you think you have a problem, many here prefer to treat the parents, and are willing to lose a batch of infected fry, to try again with clean parents that would produce basically clean fry.
