Kinda what I have for my sump, no baffles, just one large BCB. Also, I have other bio media in the sump to aid with the bio filtration.

How did you cycle it? The BCB.

Enjoyed reading your journal Shan some ups and downs but your getting some rewards for your efforts so that is nice to see. Keep up with the updates as great to see what people are doing.

Couple of quick updates -

Been a long few weeks due to cold weather and rain preventing getting any work on the stand done. But I have -

-Drilled both holes successfully on the 125

-Fully setup and cycled the BCB's (at least for 30 gals of water volume)

-Started painting (2 layers of primer) on the stand (forgot pics)


here is the a pic of the stand before sanding. Doors are hung using French cleats

The cloudiness went away after 24hrs.

So get this. The BCB's cycled 4ppm of ammonia within 4 days with half a cup of seeded material to jumpstart.

This is insane to me.

Day 0 - Rinse and install BCB's, let dust settle. Dumped a bottle of Tetra Safe Start+

Day 1 - Add seeded material (couple of ceramic rings), and 4ppm of ammonia for my 29 gal.

Day 2 - Observe

Day 3 - Measure Ammonia for the lols, and find it at 0. Measure Nitrite and is at 4ppm+.

Day 4 - 0 Everything and 10-20ppm Nitrates.

Regarding your readings. Why are you so surprised? You put starter and media from the current tank, so you have handful of bacteria there already

Not that much bacteria. Very little and tank wasn't established that long. Also have a 20 gal I'm cycling the exact same way and method only difference is it has a HOB with ceramic rings in it, and it still has 4ppm ammonia after 4 days
