I am so sorry. I've had it happen myself. It's devastating.
When I got home, one of my pair jumped out of the water and is now dead. The other is still alive in the tank and we tried putting the suicide one back in its breeding tank. Now it is dead and im so frustrated. My first pair, my first wrigglers, all gone.

Mama Bear
Oh no mate, that's devastating
Sorry buddy. You've come a long way in such a short time. Hang in there!!
So sorry Donny, please do not let this setback keep you from moving forward!!
Pat
Your discus are talking to you....are you listening
very sorry to hear
Thanks for all the support, I was just really happy seeing wrigglers and getting ready to take care of them, I honestly didn't expect any discus to jump when I had them for months in my 80 gallon. Now moving forward, planning to get more discus and hoping another pair will mate up.
Along with your new discus you will be getting a glass hood, I hope

So sorry for your loss. Beside getting new discus, I think it's important to figure out why your fish jumped out of tank. In my short experience with discus, I think there might be something that really spooked the fish.
I had my fish almost jumped out of my tank not too long ago. I had no idea what happened until I saw my aquarium light went on and off so rapidly one night. That really freaked my fish out and they were dashing like crazy. I later on found my timer power strip to be faulty.
Hope this helps.
I realized it might be movement from my parents or from my dog. I realized when I got the breeding tank, my dog saw the fish since he can see the fish and the fish can see him close up. He probably got on the couch and the discus probably got spook by him and probably started darting and jumping out. I wasn't at home at that time to save it but after the discus died, I don't have a pair to decide breeding anymore so I just refunded my tank.
As far as a cause I believe it was the sheer act of spawning, it has a strange effect on fish, you can have a generally docile fish but when they spawn they can do a complete 180 as far as behavior, and that could be why you never had any jumpers until they spawned, so don't get rid of the dog or parents just yet, but instead cover your tanks it's cheap insurance considering your loss
