Thread: Breeding Red Leopards

  1. #1

    Default Breeding Red Leopards

    I was reading an old post about breeding and read;

“Leopards are recessive and future inbreeding causes the spots to merge so back breeding or cross breeding to a strong spotted lineage is necessary for spots to prevail.”

As someone who is about to go out an buy 6 Stendker red leopards with the view to potentially breed them, should I be looking to cross breed with another strain?

Despite the name red leopard, I think Stendker's red leopard are actually a variation of the pigeon blood strain. Saying this since the one I have has red eyes and a similar coloration to the stendker pigeon blood red/blue. The red leopard has all the characteristics of a pigeon blood, with red eyes, black fins, and displays peppering; therefore, I think it is PB based, not leopard based. Should the red leopard be a PB as I believe, you should breed it to other PB's. If you don't, you'll get a heavily peppered strain.

Thanks, what if I were to breed with other red leopards? Would that be ok?

I think you should ask Stendker this question. If you are in the US I am sure Discus Hans may know also.

Good crosses for the Red Leopard are other RL's, Snakeskin, LSS, Blue Diamond, etc... The first generations will look like either parent or throw back to the Turq.

When I was breeding LSS x LSS, I got about 25% LSS, 25% Leopard and the rest were Turq based fry. All pretty nice!

    Just don't cross with PB...

Are the dots or spots already line up straight in a row and are very close together?

The stock pictures of Stendker red leopard show the dots being close together.

I’ve not gone to see them yet.

Perhaps another strain may be more simple to breed for my first attempt?

Hi __? Welcome to Simply Discus.
You've gotten good advice on strain choices, especially PB vs non-PB. I'm just wondering what your discus experience is. That might have something to do with the strains you choose.

    Hi,

First time keeping discus, but a fair bit of experience with other fish.

If the spots are very close together even at the age say 10 months of age, when they become adults most likely the spots will connect forming
    an red line.

This is what Hans told me:

Therefore, you should breed it to other PB strains, unless you're ok with peppering.

I may just opt for a strain I can breed with its own strain then, to avoid peppering.

Would something non PB based be better?

Breeding together two non PB would avoid the peppering. Strains like blue turks or snakeskins.
